Venessa D'Arpino sets two school marks at LBSU
April 15, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Oregon State redshirt sophomore Venessa D'Arpino set Oregon State records in the 100 and 200 meters on Saturday to lead the Beavers at the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State.
In her first 100 this season, D'Arpino won her heat and took eighth overall in 11.70 to break the former standard of 11.77, set in 2016 by her twin sister, Kerissa. Venessa's former best in the event was 12.06, at the 2016 OSU High Performance Meet.
In the 200, she placed fourth in her heat and fifth overall in 23.81, .01 faster than her previous mark, set on April 8 at the Sun Angel Classic. She has set the 200 mark three times this season; at Stanford on April 1 (23.83), at Tempe on April 8 (23.82) and again on Saturday at Long Beach.
Her PRs entering the season were 12.06 in the 100 and 24.67 in the 200. She has bettered those times in every race this outdoor campaign.
Venessa now holds the school outdoor records in the 100 (11.70) and 200 (23.81), and is second in the 400 (54.73). She holds the school records in the indoor 6- (7.55) and 400 (55.60); is No. 2 all-time to Kerissa in the indoor 200 (24.67), and ran a leg on the school-record outdoor 400 relay (46.01) and indoor 1600 relay (3:49.98) teams.
Senior Kara Hallock posted the No. 2 all-time mark in the long jump by going 19-9.50, a PR by more than four inches. She placed seventh in the event and challenged the school mark of 20-1, set by Colleen Gibson in 1983.
Senior Devin Collins ran season-best times in the 100 (13.83) and 400 (1:00.94) hurdles and placed 17th and fifth, respectively. Senior Ally Jackson cleared 5-7 in the high jump, tying her for No. 8 all-time. Senior Rachel Picknell threw a season-best 159-6 in the discus, breaking her old No. 2 all-time mark.Â
"It was a long weekend but a great weekend," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "We had lots of highlights, Venessa in the sprints, Kara in the long jump and hurdles, Ally in the high jump, Morgan Anderson had a great double in the 1500 and 5000 at Azusa Pacific and Helen Anne Haun had a great pole vault. The weather was outstanding and we responded accordingly."
The Beavers have set three current school records and have posted 33 all-time top-10 times or marks this season.
OSU competes at the Fresno State Invitational on April 22. It then hosts the annual High Performance Meet on April 28-29 at the Whyte Track & Field Center.
