Beavers Even Series With 5-2 Win
April 14, 2017 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Adley Rutschman tallied three hits and every Oregon State starter recorded at least one hit to lead top-ranked Oregon State to a 5-2 win over Washington Friday at Husky Ballpark.
Â
The win evened the series at one game apiece, with the rubber match coming Saturday at 2:05 p.m. PT. Oregon State improved to 29-2 overall, and 13-1 in conference play, extending its lead over second-place UCLA and Washington (20-13, 7-4) to 4 ½ games. The Bruins started play Friday at 7 p.m., and can take over sole possession of second place – and remain four games behind OSU - with a win over Stanford.
Â
Rutschman singled twice and doubled home a run in the eighth for his second career three-hit game. Christian Donahue, Michael Gretler and KJ Harrison all had two hits to help guide the Oregon State offense, which tallied 15 hits on the day.
Â
Bryce Fehmel started for the Beavers, scattering six hits and a run in 6 2/3 innings. The sophomore earned the win, improving to 4-1 on the year.
Â
The loss was charged to UW starter Leo Nierenberg, who dropped to 1-2 after giving up a run and four hits in 1 2/3 innings. The Beavers did most of their damage off reliever Jordan Jones, who gave up nine hits and four runs in 4 1/3.
Â
Up 1-0 entering the fourth, OSU scored two in the frame thanks to RBI singles by Jack Anderson and Michael Gretler. The Huskies scored one in the fifth, but OSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by Cadyn Grenier in the seventh and Rutschman's RBI in the eighth.
Â
More First-Inning Offense
Trevor Larnach drove home a run in the first for the second straight game, pushing OSU to a 1-0 lead after half an inning. On Thursday, it was a double past the third-base bag. On Friday, he sliced a hard single to right, bringing Steven Kwan in from second.
Â
Throwback Grays
For the second time this season – and in as many weeks – the Beavers donned their 2007 throwback gray uniforms. Oregon State donned them for the first time in the 16-inning win over Utah last Saturday.
Â
Lowering That ERA
Bryce Fehmel's one run allowed in 6 2/3 innings lowered his earned run average to 3.00 from 3.25 prior to the start. With his start, Oregon State's starting staff has an ERA of 1.83 in 197 innings this season – 40 earned runs allowed – and has struck out 179 to just 52 walks. In 18 games away from Goss Stadium this season, the starters have a 1.81 ERA – 24 earned runs in 119 1/3 innings.
Â
Grenier Extends To 10
Cadyn Grenier doubled in the fourth inning, extending his hit streak to 10 games. That ties Trevor Larnach for the second-longest hit streak by an OSU player this season. They both trail Nick Madrigal's team-long 17-game streak.
Â
Rubber Match Saturday
Oregon State will be playing to win its seventh consecutive Pac-12 series dating back to 2016. The Beavers will also be playing to win their fourth consecutive series over Washington, and second-in-a-row in Seattle. OSU entered the three games having won nine of the last 12 series between the teams dating back to 2005.
