Oregon State guard selected in first round
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Oregon State standout Sydney Wiese took the next step on her basketball journey Thursday afternoon, as she was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks with the No. 11 overall pick in the WNBA Draft.
"It was such a blessing to be part of the draft experience," Wiese said. "Once you hear your name called, it's a dream come true. It's something you picture in your mind when you're a kid shooting in the driveway. I'm so thankful for this opportunity and excited to go to LA."
Wiese is the highest Oregon State player ever selected in the draft, and the third Beaver picked in the last two years, joining Ruth Hamblin and Jamie Weisner. Hamblin is about to begin her second season with the Dallas Wings, while Weisner will join Wiese in Sparks training camp.
Oregon State's first ever Senior CLASS Award winner, Wiese was named an All-American by the Associated Press, Wooden Award and USBWA. The guard set the Pac-12 career record for made 3-pointers, and is the Oregon State record holder for career assists. Wiese averaged 15.2 points per game this season, and was among the top 20 in the nation in 3-point percentage. She ended her career fifth in program history for career points, and helped lead Oregon State to three Pac-12 titles. Wiese is part of the first Beaver senior class to ever make the NCAA Tournament all four years of their career.
A speech communication major, Wiese is the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and an Academic All-America selection. The senior launched her own web series in conjunction with Oregon State gymnast Megan Jimenez, and hopes to go into broadcasting at the conclusion of her playing career. She has also worked extensively in the community, donating her hair in a special Haircuts for Cancer ceremony and participating in a Candlelighters for Cancer fishing trip over the summer.
The WNBA opens training camp on April 23. The Sparks will open their preseason slate on May 2 vs. New York, before tipping off the regular season on May 13.
