Beavers Lead Tourney With 18 Holes To Play

EL MACERO, Calif. – The Oregon State men's golf team battled through 36 holes on Thursday and holds a two-stroke lead for the title at the El Macero Classic.

The Beavers shot a 23-over 301-298--599 at the par-72, 6,966-yard El Macero Country Club to lead the 14-team field heading into Friday's final round.
Â
UC Davis is second with a 25-over 601, Fresno State is third with a 27-over 603, Grand Canyon is fourth with a 29-over 605, and Washington State and Seattle U. are tied for fifth with a 31-over 607.

The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament begins Friday morning and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.

Junior Jonas Liebich, senior Kevin Murphy and sophomore Trevor Yu are all in the top 11 after Thursday's two rounds.

Liebich shot a 5-over 77 in the morning round but bounced back with a 1-under 71 in the afternoon to put him in a tie for sixth place with a 4-over 148. His best career finish is a tie for 11th place at the Redhawk Invitational last year.

Murphy also played better in the second round, shooting a 1-over 73, to put him in a tie for eighth place with a 6-over 77-73--150. The Rogue River, Ore., native was just named Oregon State's Student-Athlete of the Month for March after earning a 4.0 GPA during the winter term.

Yu is tied for 11th place with a 7-over 70-81--151. He was 2 over through 11 holes in his morning round before catching fire with two birdies, four pars and an eagle on the par-5, 554-yard 18th to finish with a 2-under 70. It equals his best career round at Oregon State, which he first shot at the Bandon Dunes Championship this past March.

Freshmen Shawn Lu and Kyosuke Hara are tied for 22nd and 44th, respectively, as Lu posted scores of 78-75 and Hara went 77-79 on the opening day.

Ben Corfee of UC Davis and Alex Lee of Fresno State share the individual lead with a 1-over 145.
