
Heimlich, Madrigal Recognized By Golden Spikes

The duo help make up part of the 40-man midseason watch list
DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State junior Luke Heimlich and sophomore Nick Madrigal have each been named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List, USA Baseball announced on Wednesday.

Madrigal remains on the watch list after being placed on it prior to the season, while Heimlich is on it for the first time this year. Both have been recognized by the Pac-12 Conference this season, with Heimlich named Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 21 and Madrigal as Player of the Week on April 3.

Heimlich, a left-handed pitcher from Puyallup, Wash., is 5-0 with a 0.77 earned run average in 58 2/3 innings. The speech communication major has 63 strikeouts to just 12 walks and opponents are batting .157 against him.

Madrigal, meanwhile, is batting .392 with 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 19 runs batted in. The sophomore middle infielder has struck out just five times, compared to 13 walks, and has a .452 on-base percentage this season.

Semifinalists for the 2017 Golden Spikes Award will be announced May 31. Finalists will then be announced June 14 with the trophy presentation scheduled for June 29.
