Venessa D'Arpino sets record in 200 meters
April 01, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
STANFORD, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore Venessa D'Arpino set an Oregon State record and placed second overall in the 200 meters on Saturday when she ran 23.83 at the Stanford Invitational.
D'Arpino became just the third Beaver to eclipse the 24-second barrier when she broke the old mark of 23.96, set in 1988 by Rosie Williams. Asa Pennington is the only other OSU sprinter to go under 24 seconds; she ran 23.97 in 1982.
D'Arpino now holds three school records. She set the 60 meter (7.55) and 400 meter (55.60) indoor standards earlier this year. She also ranks second all-time in indoor 200 (24.67) and the outdoor 400 (54.73), and is tied for sixth in the outdoor 100 (12.06).
Also on Saturday, redshirt sophomore Gwyneth McMorris and junior Kala Kopecek went 1-2 in their 800-meter section and established PRs at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
McMorris took 11th overall in 2:13.92 in her first outdoor race of the season, the No.9 all-time clocking in school history and a PR by more than one second. Her former best was 2:15.12, on Feb. 25 at the indoor Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships.
Kopecek placed 12th in 2:14.38 in her 2017 outdoor debut. Her former PR was 2:15.95, set at the 2016 Oregon Twilight Meet.
D'Arpino was the only Beaver to compete at Stanford on Saturday. On Friday, senior high jumper Ally Jackson took first place by clearing 5-5, matching her season-best effort, and senior pole vaulter Helen Ann Haun took third place at 12-5.50.
The Beavers have turned in 15 all-time top-10 times or marks in the first three weeks of the outdoor season.
They return to action next weekend at a variety of meets. Some will compete at the John Knight Twilight Meet at Western Oregon on April 7; others will go to the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State or the Jim Click Multis at Arizona.
OSU's lone home appearance of the year is the April 28-29 OSU High Performance Meet, at the Whyte Track and Field Center.
