Cotton Earns Pitcher of the Week Honors
March 07, 2017 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO – After recording two wins this past week at the San Diego Classic, including her first career no-hitter, senior left-handed pitcher Taylor Cotton was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of Week the conference announced Tuesday morning. The weekly honor is the first of the season for the Beavers and for Cotton.
Â
Cotton finished the San Diego Classic with a 0.86 ERA, while hurling two complete-game shutouts. The senior threw 16 1/3 inning and punched out 16 batters, while allowing just five hits and two earned runs.
Â
The economics major from Lincoln, Calif., holds a 5-1 record so far this season, while carrying a 1.34 ERA. She has posted a team-high 41 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings thrown and is holding her opponents' batting average to a .191 mark.
Â
Cotton started the weekend with a five-inning shutout to Miami (Ohio), where she was just shy of a perfect game, giving up a walk and a hit batter. She dusted six batters en route to her first career no-hitter.
Â
Cotton followed her no-hitter the following day with a start against McNeese State. She threw 4 1/3 innings and struck out five batters before being relieved. The Beavers went on to win 7-2 against the Cowgirls.
Â
The lefty got the nod the final day against San Diego, despite experiencing flu-like symptoms. That did not hold her back, as she hurled another complete game shutout, striking out five batters and allowing just three hits.
Â
The Oregon State softball team will continue its non-conference schedule this weekend at the Fresno State Classic. The Beavers will play four games, two each, against Sacramento State and host Fresno State, before opening its home schedule on Monday against No. 7/7 Minnesota.
