Beavers Fall to Stanford in Pac-12 Tourney Final
March 05, 2017 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 6/6 Oregon State women's basketball team battled for a full 40 minutes, but came up just short, as No. 9/10 Stanford topped the Beavers 48-43 in the Pac-12 Tournament Final in Seattle, Wash.
"I thought Stanford played a great game tonight," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "All three games we've played against them have been really tough and really similar. I can't say enough about our team. I'm proud of the grit and the heart we've showed over the last three games. There are big things ahead for this group."
Oregon State will head to the NCAA Tournament with a 29-4 record, already the second-highest win total in program history.
Sydney Wiese earned All-Tournament team recognition, after scoring 13 points and dishing out three assists. The senior led the Beavers in scoring in all three of their Pac-12 Tournament games.
Junior Marie Gulich notched her second-straight double-double, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Mikayla Pivec went 3-for-4 from the floor, scoring eight points.
Oregon State held Stanford to 33.3 percent shooting in the contest.
The Beavers exploded out of the gate, scoring 14 unanswered points to prompt a Stanford timeout with Oregon State up 16-3. The Beavers would maintain a double-digit lead for most of the first quarter, to end the period up 22-12.
Stanford made a push in the second quarter, scoring eight-straight points to get back within four. The Cardinal was down three in the closing seconds of the first half, before Wiese banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send Oregon State to the break up 29-23.
The teams went back-and-forth early in the third quarter, as the Beavers carried a 34-30 edge into the media timeout. Stanford was able to level the score at 34, but senior Kolbie Orum answered with a fade-away to return the lead to Oregon State. The Beavers would enter the final 10 minutes up 36-34.
Stanford took its first lead since the first quarter three minutes into the closing frame. The Cardinal went in front by six with four minutes to go, but the Beavers would battle back to get within three in the closing minutes. Oregon State could not get over the hump from there, as the Cardinal took the win by five.
The Beavers will now await the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will be held on March 13.
