Cotton Hurls No-No; Everett Walks-off in the 10th
March 03, 2017 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – The Oregon State softball team got back into the win column today at the San Diego Classic with two victories against Miami (Ohio) 9-0, before an 11-10 extra-inning win over UC Davis. The Beavers needed 10 innings to secure the victory over the Aggies.
Â
GAME 1 vs. OHIO (MIAMI)
Taylor Cotton hurled five scoreless innings, while not allowing a single hit to record her first no-hitter of her career en route to her fourth win of the season. The no-no was the first time since March 15, 2015, when Bev Miller recorded one in a 13-0 win against UC Santa Barbara. Cotton is the 16th Beaver of all time to record a no-hitter.
Â
The Beavers scored in every inning of the game, while Alysha Everett highlighted the offense blasting her fifth home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field in the third.
Â
McKenna Arriola and Jessica Garcia both recorded 3-for-3 performances from the dish, while Arriola also led with a team-high three RBI. Everett finished 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI and three other Beavers tallied multiple hits.
Â
Cotton finished the game with six strikeouts, while recording one walked and hit one batter. She faced just 17 batters in the five innings.
Â
GAME 2 vs. UC DAVIS
In a game that saw six lead changes and three ties, Oregon State trailed by as many as five runs midway through the game, but came back and took UC Davis to 10 innings to secure the win. Alysha Everett recorded a hit through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the 10th to walk-off and secure the victory.
Â
Oregon State lead 3-2 before the Aggies piled on six runs – all unearned – in a mistake-filled fourth inning to give up the lead and trail by five.
Â
The Beavers chipped away at the Aggie lead in the bottom half of the inning, after Kayleen Shafer hit a two-run homer to center field to bring them with three.
Â
The following inning, Oregon State got within a run before an Aggie error allowed it to score two more runs and take a 9-8 lead.
Â
The Beavers lead heading into the seventh inning and were one out away to winning the game, before UC Davis hit a single to center field to score two runs and steal a one-run lead late.

The Beavers retaliated with a one-out double courtesy of Shelby Weeks who blasted it off the left-center wall to tie the game up 10-10.
Â
In extra innings, the international tiebreaker rule became in effect and both teams left the runner stranded on base until the 10th inning. The Beavers had two outs in the bottom of the frame before Alysha Everett stepped into the box. The junior took the first pitch and sent it through the left side to end the game in walk-off fashion.
Nerissa Eason made her seventh start and pitched 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Shawna Burke in the top of the fourth. Burke threw 2/3 of an inning in relief before giving the ball to Meehra Nelson to finish the game. Both Eason and Nelson recorded five strikeouts, while the staff only accounted for two of the 10 Aggies' runs.
Â
McKenna Arriola and Kayleen Shafer led the offense, both with three hits, while Shafer finished with three RBI. Shelby Weeks was the other Beaver to record multiple hits and batted in a pair of runners.
Â
Oregon State (10-5) will continue at the San Diego Classic tomorrow with one game against McNeese State starting at 10:30 a.m., at the San Diego Softball Complex.
