Beavers With A Second Straight Walkoff
March 25, 2017 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Preston Jones scored all the way from second on a wild pitch to send the top-ranked Oregon State baseball team to its second consecutive walkoff win over No. 9 Arizona, 5-4, Saturday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Â
Jones, who was pinch running for Zak Taylor, stole second base with Adley Rutschman at the plate. Rutschman swung on a ball in the dirt on a 2-2 pitch from reliever Cody Deason. Arizona catcher Cory Voss, who had homered to tie the game at four in the top half of the ninth, was unable to block the ball. He couldn't find it at the backstop, enabling Jones to come home with the winning run.
The win sent Oregon State to its 14th consecutive win – the nation's longest active streak – and a 19-1 record on the season. The Beavers are 5-0 in Pac-12 Conference play, while Arizona is 2-3 and 16-6 overall.
Â
Arizona pushed to a 3-1 lead after five, scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth after OSU got on the board first thanks to a sacrifice fly by KJ Harrison in the third.
Â
The Beavers answered with a three-run sixth inning. Christian Donahue, in as a pinch hitter, was able to beat out a double play ball, driving in a run. Two batters later, Taylor drilled a double to the gap in left, allowing Trevor Larnach to score from third and Donahue from first.
Â
Deason took the loss for Arizona, falling to 1-1. Max Engelbrekt, meanwhile, picked up the win after pitching in the top of the ninth. He improved to 1-0.
Â
Bryce Fehmel started for the Beavers and scattered three hits and three runs over eight innings. He struck out six and walked two.
Â
Going For A Sweep Sunday
Oregon State is going for a sweep of Arizona Sunday, which would be the Beavers first over the Wildcats since 1998 when Goss Stadium at Coleman Field was simply Coleman Field. Oregon State last swept Arizona in 2013 in three games in Tucson.
Â
Sixth Inning Comes Up Key Again
Oregon State scored three runs in the sixth inning, keyed by Zak Taylor's two-run double. The Beavers have outscored teams, 18-2, in the sixth this season.
Â
Streaks Galore
Nick Madrigal, Trevor Larnach, Cadyn Grenier and KJ Harrison all finished with at least one hit in Saturday's game, and each extended significant hit streaks. Madrigal will carry a 12-game streak into Sunday – he's two shy of a career-long 14-gamer in 2016 – while Larnach is at nine games. Grenier, meanwhile, pushed his to five games, and Harrison will be at four games heading into the finale.
