Oregon State improved to 17-1 on the year

PHOENIX – Jake Thompson struck out a career-best 10, KJ Harrison tallied three hits and the Oregon State baseball team swept Arizona State with a 4-0 win over the Sun Devils Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

With the win, Oregon State (17-1 overall, 3-0 Pac-12 Conference) swept the Sun Devils in Arizona for the first time since the 1966 season. It is the fourth series victory for the Beavers at ASU (9-10, 0-3) and first since 2008.

The Beavers, ranked as high as No. 1 in the country, have won a school-record six consecutive games over Arizona State, stretching to a 2016 series sweep at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Thompson, who totaled 96 pitches in the outing, earned his fifth win of the season, pushing him into the nation's lead. He walked three and scattered two hits in addition to his career-high 10 strikeouts.

Oregon State scored first when Tyler Malone grounded out to second in the third inning, enabling Harrison to come in from third.

The Beavers made it 2-0 in the fourth when Christian Donahue drove a single to center, scoring Nick Madrigal from second. Madrigal had singled and stole second before Donahue's RBI.

The Beavers gave themselves breathing room with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Elliott Cary drove a single up the middle to drive in Michael Gretler, and Cadyn Grenier followed suit with his own single up the middle, driving in pinch runner Preston Jones.

Harrison paced the Oregon State 12-hit attack with his second straight three-hit game, while Madrigal, Cary and Grenier all had two.

Arizona State starter Eder Erives exited after 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs with four walks and three strikeouts. He was charged with the loss, dropping to 0-1.

The win was the 12^th straight for the Beavers, which is the fourth-longest active streak in the nation.

Scoring First
The Beavers scored first, on an RBI groundout by Tyler Malone in the third, for the 14^th time this season. Unlike the first two games of the Arizona State series, Oregon State was unable to score in the first two innings.

Madrigal's 10-Gamer
Nick Madrigal became the first Oregon State player with a 10-game hit streak this season when the sophomore singled to right in the second inning.

Two Straight
KJ Harrison doubled twice in Saturday's win, and finished with his second consecutive three-hit game. He went 6-for-10 over the final two games of the series.

Staff Domination
The Oregon State pitching staff, in 27 innings over the three games, limited Arizona State to nine hits, one run and six walks while striking out 31.
