Beavers Win Series Vs. ASU, Go For Sweep Saturday
March 17, 2017 | Baseball
PHOENIX – Nick Madrigal, KJ Harrison and Cadyn Grenier all had three hits to help pace the Oregon State baseball team to a 10-1 win over Arizona State Friday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Â
Bryce Fehmel took advantage of Oregon State's 16-hit outburst, limiting Arizona State to one run over eight innings. He earned the win, improving to 3-1 on the year.
Â
The 16 hits marked a season high for the Beavers (16-1 overall, 2-0 Pac-12 Conference), who also saw Trevor Larnach drive in three. Grenier, meanwhile, hit his first career home run in the eighth, and Christian Donahue doubled twice and drove in two.
Â
Madrigal singled twice and doubled once to extend his hit streak to a team-best nine games, while Larnach, who finished with one hit, pushed his to six. Harrison's three-hit day tied a career-high for the junior.
Â
Oregon State, ranked as high as No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball, scored a pair of runs in the first inning for the second consecutive game. Harrison drove a run-scoring single to right, then watched as Donahue scored when Larnach hit into a double play.
Â
Up 3-0 after a Larnach sacrifice fly in the third, the Beavers gave Fehmel some breathing room by sending 10 batters to the plate in a four-run sixth. Christian Donahue highlighted the inning with a two-run double down the right field line.
Â
Oregon State chased Arizona State (9-9, 0-2) starter Spencer Van Scoyoc after 4 1/3 innings. The lefty took the loss to drop to 0-1 after allowing six hits and three runs.
Â
The win pushed Oregon State to its 11th straight victory. The Beavers have now had at least one 10-game win streak, or longer, in each of the last five seasons.
Â
First Inning Tracker
The Beavers scored two first-inning runs for the second consecutive game. That pushed Oregon State's advantage in the first to 25-3 on the year.
Â
Scoreless Streak
Arizona State scored its first run of the game, and the series, in the seventh. That run snapped a streak of 43 2/3 scoreless innings against Pac-12 opponents for the Oregon State pitching staff. The last run allowed prior to Friday's game was in the eighth in the second-to-last series of 2016, at USC. The Beavers then held UCLA scoreless over the entire three-game series to end 2016.
Â
More Than Just Offense
The OSU offense certainly provided some highlights, but the defense deserved its fair share of recognition as well. Christian Donahue and Elliott Cary both made diving catches, KJ Harrison sprawled out on a sharp grounder at first and Cadyn Grenier turned a 6-3 double play after fielding a ball behind the bag at second.
Â
The Sixth
Oregon State sent 10 to the plate in the sixth, scoring four runs. The Beavers have now sent nine or more to the plate four times this season. OSU had previously done it March 4 against UC Davis.
Â
Swiped
KJ Harrison became the first Oregon State player with more than one stolen base in a game when he swiped two Friday. Harrison is 5-for-6 on the season and is second on the team overall to Nick Madrigal's seven.
Â
Streak Vs. ASU
The win Friday marked the fifth in a row for the Beavers over Arizona State, equaling a school record. Oregon State won five straight over ASU from 1966-67. The series victory, meanwhile, marked the fourth for the Beavers all-time at ASU; OSU last achieved that in 2008.
