Beavers go 5-5 on opening day of NCAAs

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Every Oregon State wrestler won one match and all remained alive for the second day on Thursday after the first two sessions of the NCAA Championships at the Scottrade Center.
Seniors Joey Palmer (133) and Joey Delgado (149), redshirt juniors Jack Hathaway (141) and Cody Crawford (hwt.) and redshirt sophomore Corey Griego (197) each went 1-1. They will all start Friday's action in the second round of the consolation bracket.
The Beavers are in 27th place with 6.5 points heading into Friday's action. OSU went 4-1 in the afternoon session, and then went 1-4 in the evening session.
They defeated seeded opponents in their first three matches. Palmer topped 15th-seeded Jamal Morris of North Carolina State 5-2 and Hathaway pinned seventh-seeded Joseph Ward of North Carolina in 3:38. Delgado scored on a last-second reversal and avenged a regular-season loss by defeating 11th-seeded Davion Jeffries of Oklahoma.
Griego bested Stanford's Josh Marchok for the third time this season, 10-7, in his opening match. Crawford fell 11-1 to ninth-seeded Denzel Dejournette of Appalachian State in his first match.
In the second round, Palmer lost 15-0 to second-seeded Seth Gross of South Dakota State; Hathaway fell 8-0 to 10th-seeded Bryce Meredith of Wyoming, the 2016 NCAA runnerup; Delgado was pinned by sixth-seeded Solomon Chishko in 2:52,and Griego lost 16-4 to third-seeded Kollin Moore of Ohio State.
Crawford bounced back with a 1-0 win over Austin Myers of Missouri in the consolation round.
In the second round of consolations on Friday, Palmer meets Korbin Myers of Edinboro (Pa.); Hathaway faces Noah Forrider of Ohio and Delgado meets Matthew Novistoski of Appalachian State, who he pinned back on Nov. 12 in a dual at ASU.
Griego faces Matt Williams of CSU Bakersfield, who he defeated 8-3 in a Feb. 12 dual at OSU. They were teammates at Sultana High School in Apple Valley, Calif.
Crawford meets 10th-seeded Nathan Butler of Stanford for the third time this season. Crawford won 3-1 in sudden victory at OSU on Jan. 30, and 5-4 in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament on Feb. 26.
The tournament runs through Saturday. Both of Thursday's sessions drew sellout crowds of 18,157.
