PHOENIX – Luke Heimlich stymied Arizona State for eight scoreless innings, and Trevor Larnach and Andy Atwood drove in first-inning runs to send the Oregon State baseball team to a 2-0 win over Arizona State Thursday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Heimlich held the Sun Devils (9-8 overall, 0-1 Pac-12 Conference) for 4 2/3 innings and limited ASU to two hits over eight strong innings of work. The junior left-hander struck out eight, walked two and improved to 4-0 on the year.

The Beavers, ranked as high as No. 1 in the country, grabbed the lead in the first thanks to a pair of two-out hits from Larnach and Atwood. Larnach doubled to the gap in left, scoring KJ Harrison from first. Larnach made it to third on the throw to the plate and scored when Atwood's soft liner just eluded shortstop Jeremy McCuin.

Max Engelbrekt tossed a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Larnach, Atwood and Cadyn Grenier all had two hits to pace the Beavers offensively.

The win was the sixth consecutive victory in conference openers for the Beavers. Oregon State, which is now 15-1, heads to the second game of the series Friday on a 10-game win streak.

Early As Always
Oregon State's two first-inning runs continued an early trend for the Beavers this season. Oregon State has scored 23 first-inning runs, while allowing just three. Better yet, both of the runs scored in the first came with two outs. Stretch that to the first two innings and OSU has outscored opponents 38-5.

Larnach And Madrigal Stretch Streaks
Trevor Larnach's first-inning RBI double pushed his hit streak to five games, which ties for his longest of the season. Larnach has three extra-base hits and six RBI during the streak. Nick Madrigal, meanwhile, pushed his team-long hit streak to eight games with a double in the fourth inning.

No, Not A Typo
Luke Heimlich continued his dominating start to the season by holding ASU to two hits over eight innings. He's gone eight innings in three straight games, and by holding the Sun Devils scoreless en route to his fourth win, lowered his earned run average to 0.25. Heimlich helped push Oregon State's starters ERA to 1.32 in 102 1/3 innings.

Pac-12 Opening Win
Oregon State opened conference play against Arizona State for the third straight season. And for the third straight year, Oregon State won a close battle with the Sun Devils. The Beavers defeated ASU 1-0 in 2015 and 3-2 in 2016. The win Thursday, meanwhile, was also Oregon State's sixth consecutive win to open conference play.

Many Oregon State alums attended Thursday's game. Andrew Moore and Joey Wong, both with the Seattle Mariners served as radio guests of Mike Parker's. Wong, fresh off an appearance in the World Baseball Classic with Team China, signed with the Mariners this week. Also in attendance were Jace Fry, Parker Berberet, Trever Morrison and Cole Brocker.
