Beavers Finish Third At Bandon Dunes
March 14, 2017 | Men's Golf
BANDON, Ore. – The Oregon State men's golf team finished in third place at the Bandon Dunes Championship on Tuesday for its fourth top-5 placing of the season.
Â
The Beavers concluded the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 6-under 286-288-284--858 at the par-72, 6,893-yard Old MacDonald Course to finish third in the 16-team field.
Â
Oregon State finished ahead of three teams ranked among the top 25 in the nation -- No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 21 Colorado and No. 23 Auburn -- and only a stroke back of No. 11 Texas Tech, which posted a 7-under 857.
Â
The Beavers have now recorded top-5 finishes in four of their seven tournaments this season -- second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, third at the Bandon Dunes Championship, and fifth at The Jackrabbit and Duck Commander Intercollegiate.
Â
"Our guys did a great job all week," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It was so fun to see them play to the level they are capable, and more importantly act and carry themselves like they know they belong.
Â
"As good as we played it really felt like we left some shots out there today, especially on the easy holes. We did a great job of executing very difficult shots on holes 9-12 all week.
Â
"Hopefully this will be the beginning of some good momentum for the rest of the spring as we beat three teams currently ranked in the top 25 in the country."
Â
Sophomore Trevor Yu led the Beavers with a career-best tie for ninth place finish after posting a 4-under 70-72-70--212. His previous best finish was a tie for 13th place at last year's Bandon Dunes Championship. The 2-under 70 in the first and third rounds were his lowest as a collegian.
Â
Senior Calum Hill had a solid and consistent tournament, finishing in 16th place with an even-par 72-71-73--216. He had 10 birdies over the three rounds and a scoring average of 3.08 on the tough par-3's, tied for the ninth best in the field.
Â
Junior Jonas Liebich and freshman Shawn Lu each finished in a tie for 20th place with a 2-over 218, as Liebich posted scores of 70-74-74 and Lu went low in the final two rounds to finish at 76-71-71.
Â
Senior Kevin Murphy had his best round of the tournament on the final day to move into a tie for 30th place with a 4-over 74-76-70--220.
Â
Oregon took the team title with a 28-under 836 and Hannes Ronneblad of Texas Tech went wire-to-wire to claim medalist honors with a 10-under 206.
Â
The Beavers have two weeks off before competing at the Duck Invitational in Eugene on Monday, March 27 and Tuesday, March 28.
