Beavers Open 2017 Season in Hawaii

THE WEEKEND
• The Beavers will start the 2017 season at the Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i from Feb. 9-11.
• Oregon State will face a trio of opponents during the three days, which include UAB, Sacramento State and Hawai'i.

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS
• UAB finished the 2016 season, 27-32 overall and 14-10 in the C-USA for a second place finish.
• The Blazers finished the season 0-10 against ranked teams.
• UAB recorded a 2-2 record at the C-USA championships, defeating Southern Miss twice, before falling to the No. 1 seed, Florida Atlantic.
• The Blazers return three seniors in the infield who started a combined 146 in the Green and Gold in 2016.
• In the outfield, UAB returns it's two corner fielders, including senior Joanna Fallen who started all 59 games last season.
• Fallen was also named to the 2017 preseason all-conference team.Â
• Oregon State is 3-0 against UAB, with its last meeting coming back on March 29, 2006.
• This will be the first time head coach Laura Berg will face the Blazers.
• Head coach at UAB is Marla Townsend in her 18 season carrying a 511-474 overall record.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
• Sacramento State finished the 2016 season 28-22 overall and 15-6 in the Big Sky Conference for a second place finish.
• The Hornets return six position starters, including a three pitchers.
• Junior pitcher Celina Matthias—Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Year—returns after finishing the 2016 season 20-13 and a 2.94 ERA.
• The Hornets hold a 12-10 record against the Beavers, with its last meeting on March 27, 2001.
• This will be the first time coach Berg will face the Hornets.
• Head coach at Sacramento State is Lori Perez in her fourth season carrying a 81-69 overall record.

SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE
• Hawai'i finished the 2016 season 24-30 overall and 8-13 in the Big West Conference for a seventh place finish.
• The Rainbow Wahine return 13 letterwinners, including 2016 Big West Freshman of the Year, Nicole Lopez and all-Freshman utility player Sarah Muzik.
• Hawai'i also returns its two starting pitcher from last season, two-time all-BWC second teamer junior Brittany Hitchcook and senior Kanani Aina Cabrales.
• Hawai'i holds a 11-6 overall record against the Beavers, with its last meeting coming back on Feb. 19, 2016.
• Coach Berg is 1-1 against the Rainbow Wahine.
• Head coach for Hawai'i is Bob Coolen in his 28th season with an overall recorded of 921-548-1.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN
• OSU head coach Laura Berg welcomed 10 players that started a game and 12 letterwinners back from the 2016 season.
• The squad also welcomed seven newcomers to start their careers at Oregon State.
• The Beavers have 19 student-athletes on the roster, including six of seven players that appeared in 48 or more games last year.
• Of the 19 SA's on this year's roster, five started every game in 2016.
