Oregon State notches seventh-straight win
TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 11/11 Oregon State women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven-straight games, as the Beavers topped Arizona 65-57 Sunday afternoon in Tucson, Ariz.
"It's tough to win on the road in this conference," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Arizona came out aggressive and tenacious. I thought we missed some opportunities to separate early on, and that kept them in the game. Credit to them for being so scrappy, and for staying in it. Any time you can get a win on the road in the Pac-12, you have to be happy with the result."
Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown led the way for the Beavers, notching her third career double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The center ended the day 8-for-10 from the floor and tallied three blocks. Senior Gabriella Hanson tallied 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting, and recorded four rebounds and three assists.
Senior Sydney Wiese wrapped up the game with 10 points and four assists, as she moved within three of the Oregon State career record for helpers. Fellow senior Kolbie Orum notched seven points and six rebounds. Freshman Mikayla Pivec went for six points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Oregon State dominated on the glass, holding a 41-23 edge in rebounds, and shot 48 percent in the contest, compared to 43 percent for the Wildcats. The Beavers never trailed in the game.
The Oregon State defense clamped down early, holding Arizona off the scoreboard for the first six minutes of the game, as the Beavers took an early 8-0 lead. The Wildcats would cut into the advantage late in the frame to send OSU into the second period ahead 16-11.
The teams would trade baskets through much of the second quarter, as Oregon State continued to keep Arizona at bay. The Beavers would head to the locker-room up 32-25.
The Beavers would explode out of the half, extending the advantage to 12 early in the third period. The Wildcats would again battle back to cut into the lead, getting within three late in the frame, but Oregon State stretched the edge to 46-38 heading into the closing frame.
Arizona refused to go away, as the Wildcats again got within three in the beginning stages of the fourth quarter. The Beavers would stay in control through the final frame, taking the win by eight.
Oregon State returns home this weekend for a pair of games against USC and UCLA. The Beavers will open the set by taking on the Trojans on Friday evening, in OSU's annual Dam Cancer game.
