Gulich posts double-double as Oregon State earns fourth win over ranked opponent
CORVALLIS – The No. 11/11 Oregon State women's basketball team notched its fourth win over a ranked opponent this season Friday evening, as it defeated No. 18/23 Arizona State 54-45 in Tempe, Ariz.
"This was a defensive battle," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "I love the way we closed this game out down the stretch. Give credit to Arizona State, as they played a really strong game tonight. Our team has found ways to win this year, and that's what we did tonight. We got the stops that we needed, and we executed."
Senior Sydney Wiese scored 16 points on 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range, as she played in her hometown for the first time in two years. Junior Marie Gulich tallied her fifth double-double of the season, going for 18 points and 10 rebounds on 9-for-14 shooting from the floor.
Senior Gabriella Hanson tallied seven points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior Kolbie Orum finished with six points.
As a team, the Beavers provided assists on 15 of their 24 made field goals, including six helpers from Wiese. Oregon State shot 44.4 percent from the floor, while holding the Sun Devils to 33.9 percent shooting, including 27.6 percent in the second half.
With the win, the Beavers have now won five-straight over the Sun Devils, and remain tied for first place in the Pac-12 with a league record of 10-1.
Oregon State jumped out to an early lead, forcing an Arizona State timeout mid-way through the first quarter, with the Beavers up 9-4. The Beavers would maintain the lead for the rest of the period to end the frame up 14-11.
The two sides would trade buckets through the early part of the second quarter, as OSU took a 25-23 advantage into the period's media timeout. Oregon State would create some separation late in the half with back-to-back 3-pointers from Wiese, before Arizona State scored the final bucket before the break to send the Beavers to the locker-room up 31-26.
The Oregon State defense would clamp down out of the intermission, holding the Sun Devils scoreless for the first five minutes of the third quarter as Oregon State jumped in front 35-26. The Beavers briefly got the lead to double-figures, before heading to the closing frame up 45-36.
Arizona State used a 7-0 run to get back within five with four minutes to play, but Gulich answered with a big bucket to spark Oregon State to the nine-point win.
Oregon State will wrap up its two-game swing in Arizona on Sunday, when it takes on Arizona in Tucson.
