Griego top seed for Pac-12 championships

STANFORD, Calif.  – Opening-round pairings for the 2017 Pacific-12 Conference wrestling championships at Stanford on Sunday were released on Saturday.
The tournament starts at 10:30 a.m. at Maples Pavilion. The championship, third-place and fifth-place matches start at 6 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
Oregon State is the five-time defending champion. Redshirt senior Corey Griego (197) received a No. 1 seed on Saturday; redshirt sophomore Kegan Calkins (125), senior Joey Palmer (133), redshirt junior Jack Hathaway (141), redshirt freshman Seth McLeod (184) and redshirt junior Cody Crawford (hwt.) were seeded second.
Senior Joey Delgado (149) was seeded third. Redshirt junior Abe Rodriguez (157), redshirt sophomore Rodney Williams (165) and freshman Bob Coleman (174) were unseeded.
Calkins (11-14) received a first-round bye and will face either Sean Nickel (CSUB) or Brandon Staley (Cal Poly) in the semifinals. The lone automatic NCAA berth goes to the champion.
Palmer (23-5) will face Ted Rico (ASU) in the first round. There is only one automatic NCAA berth for the 133-pound weight class as well.
Hathaway (16-10) faces Russell Rohfling (CSUB) in the quarterfinals. The top three placers advance to NCAAs.
Delgado (15-9) meets Joshy Cortez (Cal Poly) in the quarterfinals. The top three placers advance to NCAAs.
Rodriguez (7-13) takes on Fred Breen (Boise State) in the quarterfinals. The top two placers advance to NCAAs.
Williams (3-15) meets top-seeded Keaton Subjeck (Stanford) in the quarterfinals. Two wrestlers from this weight class will advance to NCAAs.
Coleman (5-18) takes on Travis Berridge of Cal Poly in the quarterfinals. The top two placers advance to NCAAs.
McLeod (7-6) has a bye and will meet either Bryan Battisto (CSUB) or Jacen Petersen (ASU) in the semifinals. The champion receives the automatic NCAA berth.
Griego (22-8) has a first-round bye and meets either Harley DiLulo (BSU) or Tom Lane (Cal Poly) in the semifinals. The top three placers will advance to NCAAs.
Crawford (20-6) meets Alex Encarnacion-Strand (CSUB) in the quarterfinals. The top three placers will advance to NCAAs.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for March 16-18 at St. Louis.
