February 21, 2017 | Baseball
The junior struck out 11 in the win over Indiana on Friday
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State junior Luke Heimlich has been named the Pac-12 Conference's Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday.
Â
Heimlich, a left-hander from Puyallup, Wash., earned the honor after striking out a career-high 11 batters in the Beavers' 1-0 win over Indiana on opening day Friday. He did not pick up the win, but held the Hoosiers to four hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Â
Counting back to last season, Heimlich, a speech communication major who was a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection in 2016, has thrown 14 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. In 50 career games for the Beavers, which includes 14 starts, he is 9-9 with a 3.42 earned run average. He has 109 strikeouts in 144 2/3 innings and opponents are batting .232 against him.
Â
The honor is the second of Heimlich's career and the 82nd all-time for an Oregon State pitcher, which ties the Beavers with Stanford for the most by a Pac-10/12 program.
Â
The Pac-12 award is the earliest for an Oregon State pitcher since Anton Maxwell was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 22, 2005. Heimlich is the fifth Oregon State pitcher to be recognized in February since the then-Pac-10 began weekly awards in 1986.
Â
Up Next
Oregon State returns to action Thursday when taking on Nebraska to open the Big Ten-Pac-12 Challenge at Surprise Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT – 1 p.m. in Arizona.
