Wiese sets Oregon State assists record
CORVALLIS – The No. 9 Oregon State women's basketball team tallied its fifth win over a ranked opponent this season, topping No. 15 UCLA 68-61 Sunday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
"This was a great bounce-back win over a really good team," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "The team played with an extremely high level of focus and intensity for most of this game. I loved the passion we played with. We did a good job of keeping UCLA out of transition, and we made the plays down the stretch."
Senior Sydney Wiese became Oregon State's record-holder for career-assists, tallying nine helpers to end the afternoon with 585 in her career. Wiese's record-breaking assist came in the first quarter, as she dished the ball to fellow senior Gabriella Hanson for a transition layup. The Phoenix, Ariz., native finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Mikayla Pivec filled the stat-sheet, recording 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior Kolbie Orum matched Pivec's scoring, going for 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting.
Sophomore Katie McWilliams went 3-for-4 from 3-point range to finish the game with nine points, while junior Marie Gulich recorded eight points and 13 rebounds. Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown tallied 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the floor.
Oregon State shot 47.1 from the floor in the contest, and held UCLA to 36.2 percent shooting. The Beavers also out-paced the Bruins 45-33 on the glass.
UCLA jumped out to an early 10-6 lead, but Oregon State would battle back to take an 11-10 edge in the latter-stages of the opening stanza. Pivec beat the first-quarter buzzer with an acrobatic tip-in to give the Beavers a 15-12 advantage to end the opening period.
Oregon State would build on that momentum to begin the second frame, jumping ahead by seven just two minutes into the quarter. The two sides would trade baskets for the remainder of the half, as the Beavers took a 31-27 lead into the intermission.
UCLA came out of the break hot, hitting four-straight field goal attempts to go in front five minutes into the third quarter. The Beavers would end the period on a 7-0 run to take a 49-46 lead into the closing frame.
The Beavers extended the advantage to nine mid-way through the fourth quarter. Oregon State kept the Bruins at bay from there to take the win by seven.
Oregon State will hit the road this week, as it heads to Colorado for a 7 p.m. PT tip on Friday.
