Beavers Drop Dam Cancer Tilt
February 10, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – Senior Sydney Wiese scored 17 points, but No. 9 Oregon State fell 70-50 to USC Friday evening at Gill Coliseum.
"They were the more aggressive team tonight," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Give them a lot of credit, they brought good intensity tonight. This was a little strange for us. This was a tough lesson to learn for us, but you have to turn it into a positive, and I'm confident this team will. We will be ready to go on Sunday."
Wiese donated her hair in a special postgame Haircuts for Cancer ceremony, carrying on the tradition that Ruth Hamblin started last season.
The loss snapped a streak of 15-straight Pac-12 home wins for the Beavers. The contest marked the first time this season Oregon State has failed to post a better field goal percentage than its opponent, as USC shot 48.1 percent from the floor, compared to 35.4 percent for the Beavers.
Wiese tallied two assists in the game, leaving her one short of matching the Oregon State career record.
Freshman Mikayla Pivec tallied eight points, while senior Gabriella Hanson finished with seven points on 3-for-4 shooting. As a team, the Beavers held a 35-33 edge in rebounds.
Oregon State jumped on top to start, going ahead 9-2 to prompt an early USC timeout. The Trojans responded out of the break, scoring 15-straight points to go in front by eight. USC would take a 21-14 advantage into the second quarter.
The Trojans scored the first six points of the second frame to go ahead by 13. The Beavers responded by clamping down on the defensive end, holding USC scoreless for over nine minutes to spark a 12-0 Oregon State run. The Trojans would take a 29-26 edge into the intermission.
The Beavers kept the momentum rolling in the second half, tying things up early in the third quarter. USC answered with a late surge to go ahead by nine points headed to the closing period. USC would maintain the edge in the fourth quarter to take the win by 20.
The Beavers will remain at home Sunday for a matchup with No. 15 UCLA. That game will tip off at 1 p.m. and will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
