LOS ANGELES – Oregon State guard JaQuori McLaughlin tied the school record for 3-pointers by a freshman on Thursday night in a 92-66 loss to USC at the Galen Center.
McLaughlin was 3-of-7 from deep and tied the school standard of 48 trifectas, set last season by current sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. McLaughlin was one of five Beavers (4-21, 0-12 Pac-12) in double figures and he led the team with 12 points.
Thompson Jr., sophomore center Drew Eubanks and redshirt freshman guard Kendal Manuel tallied 11 points apiece for OSU.
Freshman forward Ben Koné scored eight of his career-high 10 points in the second half for his first career double-figure game. His previous scoring high was seven against Kent State on Dec. 21.
Thompson Jr. reached double figures for the 18th consecutive time this season and for the 39th time in his career. He also had a game-high eight rebounds and a game-best six assists, giving him 11 in his last two games.
USC led 44-27 at halftime but the Beavers hit 7 of 9 shots early in the second half and used a 7-0 run to close within 59-48 with 11:20 remaining, forcing a USC timeout. Eubanks had five points, Thompson four as the Beavers cut into what had been an 18-point USC advantage.
The Trojans answered with nine unanswered points to restore the cushion to 20 (68-48) and were not challenged thereafter. Their largest lead was 28 (88-60) with 1:45 remaining.
OSU started the game with back-to-back 3-pointers by McLaughlin and Manuel to build a quick 6-0 lead. However, USC responded with a 13-2 run, never trailed from that point on and led 44-27 at halftime. OSU hit nine of its first 15 shots but then closed the half by missing its final 11 shots and going scoreless over the final 4:23.
The Beavers conclude their Southern California road trip on Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against No. 10 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. It will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
