Mark and Molnar begin second year of play for Oregon State
For the weeks leading up to the regular season, fans will get a chance to learn about every member of the 2017-18 Oregon State softball team.
This week, we meet up with Sierra Mark and Fallon Molnar in their second year of competition for Oregon State. Mark is a native of Las Vegas, Nev., and is a utility player. Molnar is a native of Cayucos, Calif., and is a utility player.
Why did you choose Oregon State?
Sierra Mark: The location, coaching staff and the ability to compete in the Pac-12 Conference.
Fallon Molnar: Because of the agriculture program and the coaching staff.
What do you enjoy about your major?
SM (Kinesiology): I really like learning about the human body and all of its glory.
FM (Agricultural Business): The fact that the agricultural program here is very hands-on and directly prepares me for my plans after college.
What do you like most about playing softball?
SM: My favorite part about playing softball is that I've made bonds with teammates that I know I'll have for life.
FM: The fact that all types of people can play, not just tall people and not just short people, anyone. I love the rush of success you get when anyone on the team succeeds.
What is your favorite thing about playing for Coach Berg?
SM: She pushes us every day to get better and never settle.
FM: Her amount of experience and knowledge. The fact that she is a strong, self-made person.
What does your uniform number mean to you?
SM (22): I've been #22 since I was five years old. I guess it's just something that I've grown up with and become attached to.
FM (32): My uniform number used to mean a lot in the past but I have realized over the past year after switching around numbers, that what's under that number and inside the jersey is what matters most.
What are the team goals for this season?
SM: Our team goal is definitely to be one of the last eight teams standing in Oklahoma City.
FM: To trust each other, have each other's back, hold each other accountable and make it to the top 25.
What is your personal goal for the season?
SM: My personal goal for the season is to finally be healthy enough to play and take advantage of every opportunity I get.
FM: To earn more at bats and help the team in any way possible in that moment in time. To be a fantastic teammate.
What athlete did you idolize growing up and why?
SM: My dad played in the NHL so obviously he's my favorite athlete (Hi dad! Love you!). He has this grit and competitiveness to him that I have always admired and he always pushes me to get better.
FM: It used to be Sierra Romero because I would always watch her success year round, but these days it is going to have to be Crystl Bustos because of the legacy she left as a hitter.
What age did you know you wanted to play softball in college and what made you realize that?
SM: I remember watching the CWS when I was about 10 years old and thinking 'those girls are awesome, I want to do that,' and now I'm here.
FM: I was a little later than most. I was 15 when I realized that I wanted to play softball in college because I had played baseball until I was 13 and I started softball at 14. I realized that I could not play baseball in college so I had to switch over.
What song/band is most likely to be playing on your phone?
SM: 2007 country-era Taylor Swift is playing more than I'd like to admit. Anything country, really. Also the Shrek 2 soundtrack always puts me in a good mood.
FM: I love a lot of the old country like George Strait or Garth Brooks, but Thomas Rhett is really getting me these days.
Do you have any pregame rituals or traditions?
SM: I have to put my uniform on in the same order every single time, otherwise I feel like I've gone against everything I've ever known.
FM: Usually I just lighten up the mood with some friends before games to get loose and then I play a pump-up song in my truck before we head to the field.
What current show could you see yourself being a part of?
SM: Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives.
FM: Maybe Duck Dynasty or Man vs. Wild.
What is the best thing about living in Corvallis?
SM: I love seeing the trees change with the seasons. I'm from Las Vegas and we have a lot of palm trees but palm trees don't change colors.
FM: How small the town is, but how much Beaver Pride they have. I come from a town of 3,000 people and it is nice to not be too overwhelmed with people.
What is your biggest phobia?
SM: My biggest phobia is bugs crawling in my ears and laying eggs on my brain.
FM: Being helpless in a dangerous situation.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
SM: My favorite things to do during my spare time are playing with dogs, taking road trips with my friends and annoying my little brother.
FM: I enjoy woodworking from barn doors or tables. In the summer I enjoy rodeo with my family and friends.
What is your favorite place on campus to hang out?
