Oregon State opens Pac-12 play with 75-63 win over Washington
CORVALLIS – An outstanding performance by senior Marie Gulich helped lead No. 17 Oregon State to a 75-63 win over Washington Friday afternoon, as the Beavers opened Pac-12 play with a victory.
Â
"I'm really proud of our effort today," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Washington brought a great effort, just like we knew they would. They played fearless and shot the ball really well in the first half. I liked the way we gained composure as the game went along. Their system is hard to play against, and I thought we adjusted to it well. I'm really proud of the team, and we had a great atmosphere in Gill today. It was a great win."
Â
Gulich went 11-for-12 from the floor, converting her first 11 attempts before recording her only miss with less than a minute to play. The center finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks, as she tallied her fourth double-double in the last five games. Gulich has scored in double-figures in all 12 of Oregon State's games this year.
Â
Sophomore Kat Tudor hit five 3-pointers to finish with 17 points, while fellow sophomore Mikayla Pivec went for 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Â
Freshman Aleah Goodman hit a trio of 3-pointers, helping spark the Beavers in the second half. Junior Katie McWilliams led Oregon State with seven assists.
Â
The Beavers out-scored the Huskies 45-27 in the second half, and 25-9 in the third quarter. Overall, Oregon State shot 50.9 percent from the floor and held the Huskies to 33.8 percent shooting. OSU also held a 43-32 advantage in rebounds.
Â
Both teams were clicking offensively to start the game, as the Beavers took a 15-14 lead into the first media timeout. The teams continued to go back and forth for the remainder of the opening frame, as the Huskies headed to the second period up 21-20.
Â
Washington extended its advantage to double figures in the second, before the Beavers headed to the break trailing 36-30.
Â
Oregon State surged back to open the third quarter, using an 11-2 run to go in front midway through the period. The Beavers would continue to roll through the remainder of the third, outscoring the Huskies 25-9 in the period to head to the fourth up 55-45.
Â
OSU continued its strong play into the fourth quarter, taking a 20-point lead mid-way through the period. The Beavers would hold on from there, taking the win by 12. Â
Â
