Oregon State Ousted at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Oregon State wrestling team had its tournament hopes dashed on the first day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. Redshirt senior heavyweight Cody Crawford advanced the furthest of any OSU wrestler, making it to the fourth round of consolations.
Crawford began his day with a pin over Harvard's Callahan in 2:14. He would matchup with No. 4 Tanner Hall of Arizona State and dropped a tightly contested match by decision 3-2 on ride time. Crawford won three straight matches with two decisions and a pin, but fell in the fourth round of the consolation bracket to No. 8 Solomon of Pittsburgh by major decision 9-0.
Three other Beavers made it to the third round of consolations; 141-pounder Jack Hathaway, 149-pounder Kurt Mode and 184-pounder Seth McLeod.
Hathaway started his day with a 7-1 decision over Columbia's Ascolese. He dropped a close 2-1 decision to Pittsburgh's Zanetta, before getting caught and pinned by Cal Poly's Schilling in the consolation bracket.
Mode lost his first match of the day, but bounced back with two straight wins. He won by major decision over K. Astle of Western Wyoming, 16-8, before winning in the first period of sudden victory with a takedown against K. Tonge of Cal State Bakersfield, 5-3. Mode was pinned in his final match in 1:56.
McLeod had a tough draw to start the day, pulling No. 6 Zavatasky of Virginia Tech for his opening bout. McLeod lost by major decision 12-3, but rebounded with two strong wins in the next two rounds; major decision A. Flores (Stanford), 14-4; decision J. Murphy (Drexel), 5-3. He lost by decision, 11-4, to No. 15 D. Gabel of Northern Colorado in his final match.
The Beavers next dual meet is Dec. 10, at currently ranked No. 9 Michigan. The Reno Tournament of Champions (Dec. 17) and the Midlands Invitational (Dec. 29-30) conclude competition for the calendar year.
Oregon State begins Pacific-12 Conference action on the road against Arizona State on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Sun Devils won the conference championship in 2017.
This year's Pac-12 Championships are hosted by the Beavers on Feb. 25 in Gill Coliseum. The NCAA Championships are March 15-17 in Cleveland, Ohio.
