Timmy Hernandez earned first team, and Ryan Nall, second team honors
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State wide receiver Timmy Hernandez has been named Pac-12 Conference First-Team All-Academic and running back Ryan Nall has earned second team honors, the league has announced.
The two headline 11 total selections from the 2017 team, as nine Beavers were chosen as honorable mention. Those nine include Blake Brandel, Jordan Choukair, Sumner Houston, Andrzej Hughes-Murray, Nous Keobounnam, Trent Moore, Artavis Pierce, Nick Porebski and Tuli Wily-Matagi.
Â
To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, be a starter or a significant reserve and play in at least half of his team's games. They may not be in their first year at their institution.
Â
For Hernandez, it is his first selection in his initial year of eligibility for the honor after transferring from Pima Community College prior to the 2016 season. A native of Phoenix, he is majoring in mechanical engineering. He ended the 2017 season having played in all 12 games, making 30 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns. His touchdown at Colorado State was the first by any player during the FBS season.
Â
Nall, meanwhile, has picked up his second Pac-12 academic honor after being named honorable mention in 2016. A speech communication major with a minor in leadership, he is also eligible for an Academic All-America selection after being named All-District by CoSIDA. The Sandy, Ore., native played in 11 games in 2017, finishing with 810 rushing yards and 240 receiving yards, tallying 10 total touchdowns.
Â
Houston's honor is the third of his career, following a second-team selection in 2015 and honorable mention honors in 2016. The Dublin, Calif., native is a construction engineering management major with a minor in business and entrepreneurship. Brandel, an offensive lineman from Milwaukie, Ore., is honored for a second time after being named honorable mention in 2016. He is a business major.
Â
Fellow offensive linemen Keobounnam (Portland – business major) and Moore (Chandler, Ariz. – business administration with an option in entrepreneurship) earned their first honors.
Â
Porebski and Wily-Matagi both earned their second career honors. Porebski, a punter and sociology major from Melbourne, Australia, was named second team following the 2016 season. Wily-Matagi, a tight end from Laie, Hawai'i, who is majoring in sociology, was also an honorable mention selection as a redshirt freshman in 2016.
Â
Also earning their first academic honors are Choukair (a kicker from Poway, Calif., majoring in digital communication arts), Hughes-Murray (a linebacker from Federal Way, Wash., university exploratory studies with a minor in business and entrepreneurship) and Pierce (a running back from Lake Alfred, Fla., university exploratory studies).
