Beavers head to Seattle for NCAA West Regional
November 08, 2017 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State cross country has been preparing all season for this week. On Friday, the Beavers head north to Seattle for the 2017 NCAA Cross Country West Regional.
"We are in a good spot, training has gone fantastic over the last several weeks," began head coach Louie Quintana. "Staying in the Pacific Northwest creates some advantages as far as the wear and tear of travel. We're prepared and feel very confident going in that we will be able to execute."
On Nov. 10, 38 women's cross country teams will descend on Jefferson Park Golf Course on the southeast side of Seattle, attempting to earn a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Ky.
The regional event is available to watch live online via FloTrack.
A maximum of seven entrants are allowed per team at the regional. Oregon State is projected to run seniors Holly Cavalluzzo and Kala Kopecek; juniors Nicole Goecke, Sam McKinnon, Juliana Mount; sophomore Greta Van Calcar; freshman Audrey Lookner.
"I'm very confident in the women we are taking up to Seattle and racing on Friday," said Quintana. "They are ready and have been racing consistently all year."
Graduate student Colette Richter will travel to Seattle as an alternate.
The women will race first at 10:30 a.m., competing over 6,000-meters. The men's race will follow at 11:30 a.m. and will cover 10,000-meters.
Jefferson Park Golf Course consists of multiple 2,000-meter loops. The course entails mostly flat fairways that occasionally cross some cart paths. This course was the site of the 2010 Pac-10 Championships, the 2011 USATF Club Nationals, and the NCAA West Regional Championships in 2012 and 2015.
At the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships the Beavers got off to a rocky start in the race. "We made a pretty sharp left hand turn about 300-meters into the race [Pac-12s]," began Quintana.
"When that happened the field size pinched down on our women and knocked over one of our girls which pushed our whole group back and we were forced to make up a lot of ground."
With a field three times as large this week, a quick start is imperative for Oregon State. "We know this straightaway is about 600-meters, which gives us plenty of time to be aggressive off the start."
"The women will be prepared to be in the mix and in a better spot despite the fact that the field size is about 250 women."
The Beavers are ranked 13th in the west region of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association Regional Rankings heading into Friday's regional race.
"We are currently ranked 13th in the west region and we just want to be better," said Quintana. "We've clearly made a tremendous amount of strides as a team this year in terms of training and the way we've competed."
All eight of the travelling party have set personal bests for a 6,000-meter race this season, adding credence to the changing culture at Oregon State. "Trying to put it all together on the same day for everybody is our ultimate goal," said Quintana.
With four teams ranked in the top 10 nationally, the NCAA West Regional is stacked with talent in arguably the best region in the country; Oregon (3), San Francisco (4), Stanford (7), and Boise State (10).
"For some of those girls it is potentially their last collegiate race, so there is some mixed feelings there with putting on your jersey with your teammates," said Quintana when talking about the importance of this race.
"I know they are excited to lay it out on the line and empty the tank, and just compete really hard."
