Men’s Golf Signs Three Student-Athletes
November 08, 2017 | Men's Golf
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State men's golf head coach Jon Reehoorn announced Wednesday that three student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to join the program for the 2017-18 season.
The class includes Carson Barry from Eagle, Idaho, Sean Kato from Redmond, Wash., and Nolan Thoroughgood from Victoria, B.C.
It's the best class in program history based on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings.
"We are excited to welcome these three young men to our program," Reehoorn said. "Carson, Nolan and Sean are all very different in their approach to the game but the constants are their work ethic, success in the classroom and love for the game of golf.
"These three young men will have an immediate impact on the success of our program and will be at the core of our success for the next four years."
Carson Barry
Barry attends Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho and is 46th on the 2018 Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and 73rd overall. He won the 2016 5A High School State title and was the runner-up at the 2017 Idaho State Amateur.
He represented Idaho at four Hogan Cups and three Junior America's Cups. In 2018, Barry posted four AJGA top 10's and was ranked 32nd in the final AJGA rankings.
Barry will major in business. His parents are Brett Barry and Angela Tigue.
He chose Oregon State because: "It felt like home the moment I stepped on campus. I believed in Coach Reehoorn at the time to prepare for the next level and I'm now looking forward to working with Noah. It was a place I could get a great education and play collegiate golf simultaneously. I'm very excited to get this opportunity started next fall."
Jon Reehoorn on Carson Barry:
"Carson is someone we have been excited about for a couple of years, and this past summer his game took a step to the next level competing on the national stage. Carson's game continues to progress in a positive way because of his work ethic. He has just begun to scratch the surface of the success he will enjoy as his confidence continues to grow."
Sean Kato
Kato attends Redmond High School in Redmond, Wash., and is 59th on the 2018 Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and 110th overall. He won the 2017 WJGA State Championship by two strokes (72-65-68) and the 2017 AJGA ACDS/Ryan Moore Junior at Oakbrook by two strokes (64-70-68).
He competed at the prestigious Junior America's Cup the past two years and helped lead Washington to the team title in 2016.
Kato will major in business. His parents are Masato Kato and Chikako Kato.
Jon Reehoorn on Sean Kato:
"One of Sean's greatest assets is the mentality he brings to the course each day. He is a bulldog. Sean loves to compete and he does it every day whether it is practice or a tournament. His competitiveness and work ethic shined through this past winter when he won three consecutive events with five of six rounds in the 60's. Even in one of the wettest winters we have ever seen in the Pacific Northwest, Sean was working hard to make sure his game was ready to compete."
Nolan Thoroughgood
Thoroughgood attends Royal Bay Secondary School in Colwood and is 70th on the 2018 Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and 129th overall. He became the youngest champion to win the British Columbia Amateur when he won the 114th annual event at the age of 15.
He also won the 2017 Junior America's Cup by four strokes (71-67-70) and was a member of Team Canada.
Thoroughgood will major in business. His parents are Garth and Danna Thoroughgood.
He chose Oregon State because: "The steps they took to recruit me were the most organized and outgoing of any of the other programs. With a system like that, I knew Oregon State was the place I trusted my future with. On top of the organization they have top-notch facilities and experienced, committed coaches."
Jon Reehoorn on Nolan Thoroughgood:
"Nolan's greatest strength is his personal belief. When I watch him play the attributes that stood out to me were his level of maturity and personal belief in his abilities. Nolan plays with a lot of passion. His maturity and passion are infectious with those around him which will make him a great asset to the team."
