Whyte Track & Field Center Upgrades Continue with Completion of Hammer Throw Cage
November 03, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State track and field is excited to announce the next completion in rounds of upgrades planned for Whyte Track & Field Center. The six-month construction efforts on the new hammer throw area were recently completed.
Â
"We already have one of the best tracks in the country and Pac-12 conference," began associate coach David Dumble. "To also get this hammer facility really shows commitment from the university to the throwing events. I think it will attract a lot of attention with recruits as well."
Â
Lance Deal, 1996 Olympic silver medalist and U.S. record-holder in the hammer throw designed and built the cage.
Â
"I'm very excited to have this facility, it is pretty sweet to have the second model from Lance Deal as he has put a lot of time and effort into it," continued Dumble.
Â
Only the second of its design in the entire country, the new cage not only meets NCAA specifications, but exceeds them.
Â
"It meets IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) specifications which are a higher level of requirements than the NCAA. We're very excited to have something so recognizable up on campus."
Â
The new cage is designed with fewer poles than usual to allow for better vantage points for coaches, athletes, media and spectators.
Â
The design features a net that lowers to the ground in the event that a hammer gets caught in the protective netting that lines the cage.
Â
"One of the nice things about the design is that there are no poles in the line of sight for all of the spectators," said Dumble. "It will be great for the competition as well as the spectators"
