Beavers Drop Hard-Fought Game To St. John’s

ORLANDO, Fla. – Oregon State built a 10-point second-half lead against St. John's but was unable to hang on in a 82-77 loss in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational on Thursday afternoon.
The Beavers led 62-52 with 9:32 to play in the game, but the Red Storm exploded with a 30-15 advantage down the stretch to win in front of 2,712 fans at the HP Field House.
Stephen Thompson Jr. scored a team-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. His brother, Ethan Thompson, also made four triples and finished with 19 points and six rebounds.
Tres Tinkle had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Drew Eubanks narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
The Beavers shot a season-best 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from beyond the arc and 88.0 percent (22-for-25) from the free throw line. But St. John's took advantage of Oregon State miscues with a 19-4 advantage on points off turnovers.
Shamorie Ponds led the Red Storm with 26 points and Marcus Lovett added 18.
Oregon State will face Long Beach State at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET) on Friday in the consolation bracket of the AdvoCare Invitational. The game is available online on ESPN3 at this link.
