
Get to Know You: Sara Lillie and Mariah Mazon

Lillie and Mazon begin their first year of competition for OSU
For the weeks leading up to the regular season, fans will get a chance to learn about every member of the 2017-18 Oregon State softball team.
This week, we meet up with Sara Lillie and Mariah Mazon as they begin their first year at OSU. Lillie is a native of Murrieta, Calif., and is a catcher. Mazon is a native of Tulare, Calif., and is a pitcher.
Why did you choose Oregon State?
Sara Lillie: I chose Oregon State for the amazing coaching staff and the beautiful campus.
Mariah Mazon: I chose Oregon State because I love the campus, the coaches and the competitiveness.
What do you enjoy about your major?
SL (HDFS): I enjoy that in the end I will be doing what I love, which is working with kids.
MM (Kinesiology): Right now is not the fun part, but after I am all done, I am going to enjoy working with and helping people.
What do you like most about playing softball?
SL: I love the competitiveness of the sport.
MM: I love the competitiveness on the field.
What is your favorite thing about playing for Coach Berg?
SL: I love how intense she is, and each and every day she pushes all of us to be great, both on and off the field.
MM: I love the intensity and passion Coach Berg brings out to practice and games.
What does your uniform number mean to you?
SL (10): My mom also wore this number in college so it makes me feel closer to her.
MM (34): My uniform number is a combination of my grandparent's birthdays, my birthday and my dad's birthday.
What are the team goals for this season?
SL: To finish top three in the Pac-12.
MM: To play as a team, to finish top three in the Pac-12 and to get past regionals.
What is your personal goal for the season?
SL: To simply do my job on and off the field and be the best teammate I can be.
MM: My personal goal for this season is to have fun and earn a starting spot.
What athlete did you idolize growing up and why?
SL: My brother, Ryan, because ever since we were little he always pushed me to get better. He sets goals and will stop at nothing to achieve them.
MM: Growing up there wasn't just one athlete I idolized, there were multiple. I loved watching any collegiate or professional athlete and seeing their intensity is what I loved most.
What age did you know you wanted to play softball in college and what made you realize that?
SL: When I was eight years old I asked my mom if she thought I could make it to the collegiate level and she told me if I worked hard, then anything is possible and that is when I knew.
MM: When I was about 11 years old I knew I wanted to play collegiate softball because I realized how much I loved it. My sister was also getting recruited and I wanted to be like her.
What song/band is most likely to be playing on your phone?
SL: Mike Sherm or SOB.
MM: Khalid, Post Malone or Beyoncé.
Do you have any pregame rituals or traditions?
SL: I am always dancing before games to shake the nerves.
MM: Not any I would like to mention.
What current show could you see yourself being a part of?
SL: Modern Family.
MM: I'm not sure.
What is the best thing about living in Corvallis?
SL: Having four seasons and being part of such a small, close community
MM: The weather.
What is your biggest phobia?
SL: None, I am fearless.
MM: Getting trapped in an elevator and it drops.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
SL: Eating Wings-N-Things and watching Netflix.
MM: Going camping or fishing with my family and hanging out with friends.
What is your favorite place on campus to hang out?
SL: BRC to get the studies done and Arnold to get my grub on.
MM: My dorm is my favorite place because it's cozy!
