Massey, McLaughlin Earn Pac-12 Awards
November 13, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State volleyball players garnered the seventh and eighth Pac-12 Conference awards of the season Monday following the Beavers' weekend sweep of the Arizona schools in the desert. Freshman libero Grace Massey earned her second Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award while setter Kylee McLaughlin was honored with her second Freshman of the Week accolade of the season.
Â
McLaughlin, who is studying biology, engineered a varied offense for the Beavers last weekend, directing OSU to its first win in Tucson and the first two-game sweep in the desert since 1993. McLaughlin spread the ball around effectively in the Beavers' three-set sweep at Arizona with middle blocker Kory Cheshire leading three players in double-digits with 12 kills. Against the Sun Devils, she registered her 11th double-double of the season recording 47 assists and 14 digs to go with a season-high five kills.
Â
Massey accumulated 36 digs, averaging 4.5 digs per set over the weekend, recording 18 in each match, making it extremely difficult for the opposition to put the ball on the floor on OSU's side of the net. Massey's scrappy play in the back row helped the Beavers secure the first season sweep of the Arizona schools since 1990.
Â
Massey is the first OSU player to be named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week twice in a season since the league adopted the current system of Offensive, Defensive and Freshman of the Week honors.
Â
The Beavers, who have completed their regular season road schedule, return to Corvallis to host Washington on Friday at 6 p.m., and Washington State on Saturday at 3 p.m. The WSU match will be televised on Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 Washington.
