November 10, 2017 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Four Oregon State players scored in double figures as the Beavers rolled to a 99-82 season-opening win over Southern Utah on Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
Â
Tres Tinkle dropped a game-high 24 points, Ethan Thompson scored 20 in his collegiate debut, and Drew Eubanks and Stephen Thompson Jr. each added 16 to delight the home crowd of 4,588.
Â
It was the 200th career win for head coach Wayne Tinkle, who is in his fourth season at Oregon State.
Â
His son, Tres Tinkle, was sensational throughout the night, going 8-for-11 from the field, 2-3 from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 from the free throw line for his 24 points. He added six rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes of action.
Â
The shot by Tinkle that had everyone buzzing was a 3/4-court heave that touched nothing but net as the halftime buzzer sounded.
Â
Ethan Thompson finished the night with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three blocked shots and two steals. The 20 points is the second most by a freshman in his Oregon State debut. Steve Johnson holds the record with 22 against Hawai'i on Nov. 27, 1976.
Â
Eubanks finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, and went 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Thompson Jr. scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Â
Kendal Manuel came off the bench and had a solid game with seven points and six rebounds.
Â
Other players who made their Oregon State debut were Alfred Hollins (8 points), Seth Berger, Zach Reichle and Xavier Smith.
Â
Oregon State outscored Southern Utah 56-30 in the paint and 14-4 on fast break points.
