Mount Paces Beavers At NCAA West Regional, Earns All-Region
November 10, 2017 | Women's Cross Country
SEATTLE, Wash. – Junior Juliana Mount earned NCAA All-West Region and the Beavers placed 13th in a 36-team field at the NCAA West Regional on Friday at Jefferson Park Golf Course.
Oregon State finished with a team total of 392 points, a six-point improvement from the regional a season ago. San Francisco earned the championship by 17 points over Stanford, 59-76; seven Pac-12 Conference teams finished in the top 12.
"Honestly it was a great day for us," began head coach Louie Quintana. "We finished 13th in the best region in the country, and we were relatively close to 8th."
The Beavers finished 90 points behind San Jose St. in 8th, but were only 15-seconds slower on the average finish. "It is awesome the way we competed, tremendous day" said Quintana.
Mount is just the second Oregon State athlete to earn such a recognition in the toughest region in the nation. She covered the 6,000-meter course in 20-minutes, 14.3 seconds finishing in 25th place, the highest individual placing at the NCAA West Regional since 2005. Mount improved 31 places from the 2016 regional.
"JJ [Juliana] had a great run," said Quintana. "She finished 25th in the region earning all-region, and is only the second athlete to ever earn all-region from OSU."
Mount was incredibly close to earning an individual spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, missing the mark by just seven seconds.
Redshirt senior Holly Cavalluzzo was 68th in 21-minutes, 04.3 seconds, while sophomore Greta Van Calcar had her highest team placing for Oregon State this season. Van Calcar finished in 89th place in 21:28.9.
Junior Nicole Goecke placed 102nd in her first NCAA West Regional race in 21:39.4. Junior Sam McKinnon was just over ten seconds behind her teammate in 112th place in 21:49.9. McKinnon and Goecke were the Beavers final counting scores.
Senior Kala Kopecek in her final race finished in 21:55.2 in 122nd place, while freshman Audrey Lookner took 132nd place in 22:01.7.
"Tremendous day," said Quintana. "The future is exciting and I am really proud of this team."
