Volleyball Falls No. 2 Stanford
October 08, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team scrapped and fended off four match-points in the final set but ultimately fell to No. 2 Stanford in three sets Sunday afternoon. It was the fourth time in six Pac-12 matches, the Beavers have faced a ranked team.
Â
The Beavers fell to 11-7 overall, and 1-5 in Pac-12 play, with the loss to the second-ranked Cardinal, which improved to 13-2, 6-0. Set scores were 25-15, 25-18, and 29-27.
Â
Trailing 2-0 at the intermission, Oregon State came back from the locker room looking to turn around the match. The Beavers seized a 13-9 lead forcing a rare Cardinal timeout. Stanford slowly closed the gap and finally caught OSU at 16-16. From there the teams traded sideouts from all the way to 22-22 with neither able to generate any momentum. Stanford took a 24-22 lead and the Beavers faced their first match-point. Kills from Mary-Kate Marshall, Kylee McLaughlin and Haylie Bennett kept forcing extra play as the Beavers could not gain the lead until Stanford put the match away 29-27. In all there were 18 ties and seven lead changes in the third set.
Â
"We keep finding ourselves at a stage where we're very close but just make too many mistakes at the end," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We need to focus on being aggressive in those situations and if we make mistakes at least we're swinging away, but becoming passive just won't work. We, as coaches, need to find a way to put more pressure on in practice and relieve pressure in games."
Â
Marshall led the Beavers' offense with 12 kills. It is the 16th time in 18 matches, Marshall has led the team in kills. Kayla Ellis led the back-row defense with 13 digs and Maddie Goings just missed her career-high with four blocks.
Â
"Haylie Bennett played well today and Maddie (Goings) was going well early and Mary-Kate (Marshall) came on late in the match. We did some good things today. I liked how our middles played. I'm pleased with how we fought hard up to the end."
Â
Game Notes: Maddie Goings served a pair of aces tying her career-mark … Kayla Ellis recorded 13 digs giving her 1,042 in her career. She passed Darby Reeder (2012-15) and Nikki Neuburger (1999-2002) to move into 12th place on OSU's all-time digs list.
Â
Next Up: The Beavers return to the road to play at Washington in Seattle next Friday, Oct. 13 and are at Washington State in Pullman on Sunday, Oct. 15.
