Beavers Sweep Bears in Pac-12 Home Debut
October 06, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – It had been 41 days since the Oregon State volleyball team had played in Gill Coliseum, but the Beavers picked up where they left off back on August 26 beating California 3-0 Friday night. It was the first conference victory of the season for OSU, which is now 4-0 on its home court.
Â
With the win the Beavers advanced their record to 11-6 and 1-4 in the Pac-12. California fell to 11-5, 2-3. OSU defeated the Golden Bears by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-13.
Â
Oregon State fell behind early 7-3 despite a pair of unforced errors by the Bears leading to an early timeout from head coach Mark Barnard. But the Beavers found a groove and began the process of working their way into the match. OSU used its middle blockers early and often with Maddy Gravley and Kory Cheshire accounting for its first three kills. While the offense was slow-starting, OSU registered four aces in the opening set and added three blocks. With the Beavers leading 18-16, Mary-Kate Marshall came alive recording her first kill of the night and then tacking on four more leading OSU to a 25-20 win in Set 1.
Â
"I told the team before the match that they may have nerves playing at home for the first time in so long and that's exactly what happened," Barnard said. "After that first timeout they really settled in and were steady.'
Â
OSU never let up and Marshall didn't cool off the rest of the match. Marshall finished with a match-high 17 kills including seven after the intermission. Kayla Ellis led the back row defense with 16 digs.
Â
In the front row, the Beavers mustered 10 blocks with Gravley setting the pace with five and Marshall and Haylie Bennett contributing four apiece.
Â
"We blocked well tonight and our serving was pretty good as well," Barnard said. "Tonight was the best game for Maddy Gravley in a while and I thought Grace Massey came in and passed very well too."
Â
Game Notes: The win is OSU's first Pac-12 win of the season … Kory Cheshire recorded three service aces a first for the Beavers since Sept. 2 at Portland … Mary-Kate Marshall was the only OSU player to record double-digits in kills with 17 … Kayla Ellis recorded 16 digs and now has 1,029 and needs only seven to move into 12th on OSU's all-time list … OSU combined to accumulate 10 total blocks, the first time in a three-set match since Idaho State on Sept. 15.
Â
Next Up: Oregon State returns to the court Sunday afternoon to take on No. 2 Stanford at Gill Coliseum. The match which is slated for a 1 p.m. start will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
