Beavers Fall to Trojans and Roadrunners in First Road Meet
October 06, 2017 | Women's Swimming
Sophomore Felicia Anderson leads Oregon State on the leaderboards
LOS ANGELES – Visiting the Uytengsu Aquatics Center for the first road trip of 2017, the Oregon State University swimming program took on Southern California and CSU Bakersfield tonight in a tri meet.
The Beavers fell to both the Trojans and the Roadrunners 185-92 and 203-88, respectively, as sophomore Felicia Anderson (Portland, Ore.) led OSU in the event.
"This team is focused on the process knowing that this meet is part of a larger goal at the Pac-12 Championships," said head coach Jennifer Buffin. "The results aren't reflective of the work they have been putting in, but they fought through each race and represented themselves and the program well against two competitive teams.
"Their attitudes and determination reflect what we're doing each day, working with intention. We will take what we learned today and work to be better tomorrow."
Anderson finished second in the 100 back with a time of 56.34 and ended the 200 back in the third spot on the podium after touching the wall with a time of 2:03.99. Both times were just short of her 2016-17 bests of 54.90 and 1:58.07, respectively, as both season bests came in the Pac-12 Championships at the end of her freshman campaign.
Oregon State had 13 different swimmers in the water on Friday evening, with seven newcomers seeing action during the meet.
Freshman Amina Bachir (Las Vegas, Nev.) put in work in the distance events and made strides in her times following the intrasquad meet the previous week. She finished sixth in both the 500 free at 5:16.82 and the 1000 free at 10:43.44.
"It is exciting to watch [Amina] in the distance events," said Buffin of the Las Vegas native. "She fights for every lap and doesn't back away from hard work."
Senior Allie Kilroy (Boise, Idaho) improved her time from last week as well and led OSU in the 100 breast with a finish of 1:07.03 in the fifth position.
Junior transfer Arianna Letrari (Bolzano, Italy) took on the 100 and 200 fly events, ending seventh overall in the 100 fly with a time of 58.24 and fifth in the 200 fly at 2:06.99.
Oregon State opened the tri meet with the 200 medley relay, as the team of Letrari, Kilroy, Anderson and freshman Callan Jackman (Dublin, Calif.) paced OSU to a third-place finish with a time of 1:48.09 in the first event of the evening.
The Beavers will return to Corvallis, Ore., next week to host their Alumni Meet at the Osborn Aquatic Center. OSU members from past and present will take to the water in the annual event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 14.
