Duals with Michigan, South Dakota State, Stanford and Arizona State Top 2017-18 Schedule
October 04, 2017 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team will have to shine on the road this season as the Beavers travel to wrestle some of the best programs in the nation. Duals with Michigan, South Dakota State, Stanford, and Arizona State among others comprise a challenging 2017-18 season.
Â
The Beavers wrestle five schools who finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships a season ago. The first of these comes on Dec. 10 when Oregon State heads to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle the University of Michigan. The Wolverines finished 10th at the NCAA's last season.
Â
"I think the schedule gives us a lot of good competition across the country," began Oregon State wrestling head coach Jim Zalesky. Â "We will go out east right away and wrestle George Mason and the Navy Classic and get to see some teams we won't get to see during the regular season."
Â
Opening the New Year in the Midwest the Beavers are on the road for duals with South Dakota State on Jan. 5 and Iowa State on Jan. 7. The Jack Rabbits of SDSU finished 16th at nationals a season ago.
Â
OSU travels for matches with conference opponents Arizona State (Jan. 20), Stanford (Feb. 10) and CSU-Bakersfield (Feb. 11). Cal Poly comes to Corvallis on Feb. 3 for the only home Pac-12 dual of the season for the Beavers.
Â
The Beavers will host the Pac-12 Championships in Gill Coliseum on Feb. 25. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Â
"It is always nice to wrestle at home, and last time we had a great crowd here and the guys wrestled really well," said Zalesky. "It is a qualifying tournament and you are looking for any advantage you can get, and wrestling at home is huge advantage."
Â
Oregon State will compete at two of the premier in-season tournaments; the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 1-2, and the Midlands Invitational at Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30.
Â
"These tournaments provide the opportunity to our individuals to see where they are at nationally and get some good competition under their belts," added Zalesky.
Â
The annual Orange & Black Intrasquad scrimmage in Nov. 6, Oregon State opens its dual-meet schedule at home on Nov. 9 with a match against Eastern Oregon at 7 p.m.
