Mount Leads Beavers at Pac-12 Championships
October 27, 2017 | Women's Cross Country
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Oregon State cross country, led by junior Juliana Mount, finished 11th at the 2017 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships on Friday at the Springfield Golf Club in Springfield, Ore.
Â
The Beavers finished with 263 points. Colorado was the winner of the women's event with a score of 53.
Â
"I think it's important to know that the results don't tell the story. We had four of our girls, one of them take a fall, and the others get stuck in the pile up," started head coach Louie Quintana. "Losing momentum 200-meters into a race is always a big challenge to battle back from and the girls did a great job."
Â
Out of the opening straightaway the course took a sharp left turn, one runner went down causing sophomore Greta Van Calcar to fall down and a group of Beavers runners to be displaced and fall towards the back half of the pack.
Â
Mount was fortunate enough to be ahead of the fall. She paced the Beavers crossing the line of the 6,000-meter course in 19:56.4 finishing in 32rd place overall.
Â
Senior Holly Cavalluzzo crossed the line next for Oregon State, finishing in 20:24.8 and in 51st place.
Â
Junior Sam McKinnon finished in 54th with a time of 20:34.0, while senior Kala Kopecek crossed the finish line in 20:50.6 for a 61st place finish. Oregon State's final scoring runner was junior Nicole Goecke who placed 65th with a 20:55.1.
Â
Sophomore Greta Van Calcar (21:00.0/67th), freshman Audrey Lookner (21:06.8/70th), graduate Colette Richter (21:20.2/89th) and freshman Emily Bacon (22:35.8/103rd) also competed for Oregon State.
Â
"I told the women let's not hang our heads, let's make sure that we're staying focused on what we need to get done here in two weeks for the regional meet," said Quintana. "It's a different race and we'll be ready."
