Oregon State Takes Fourth Overall at Head of the Charles Regatta
October 22, 2017 | Men's Rowing
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's rowing team had a strong showing at the Head of the Charles Regatta opening the fall season with a third place finish among collegiate teams in Men's Championship Fours.
"This was a Head of the Charles for the record books," began head coach Gabe Winkler. "Amazing weather and fast conditions had course records falling all over the regatta."
The Beavers' Varsity 4+ earned a third place finish among collegiate entries into the CHAMP 4+ category, the second year in a row of such placing. OSU finished fourth overall in the category after placing sixth in last year's HOCR.
"I knew the guys had to be extremely quick to contend with this field," continued Winkler. "To be just three seconds off of the course record and to place third collegiately is increcible."
Blowing last years' time out of the water by nearly two minutes, the Beavers traversed the three-mile course in a time of 15-minutes, 38.786-seconds. California (15:16.172) and Boston University (15:23.217) were the only collegiate teams to finish ahead of Oregon State.
Senior Neall Koetje, who stroked the boat, kept the aggressive tempo of 33-34 strokes per minute. "We really came together as a unit and executed the race plan," stated Koetje. "Ben's [Garrison] steering was on point, and I'm looking forward to the upcoming races and for the spring season."
United States Training Center-Princeton took first place in the Men's CHAMP 4+ with a time of 15:07.442.
Oregon State returns to action next Sunday at the Portland Fall Classic on Oct. 29.
