Beavers Set to Race at Head of the Charles Regatta
October 20, 2017 | Men's Rowing
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's rowing team open the 2017 fall season on Sunday at the 53rd annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass. This is the second consecutive year for the Beavers to row at the HOCR, and only the second time since 2012.
"This is the biggest event in rowing and is like Super Bowl weekend for fans of this sport," said Oregon State men's rowing head coach Gabe Winkler. "It's a great experience for the guys and they are prepped to do well."
The Head of the Charles is the world's largest two-day rowing event which draws more than 100,000 spectators, and more than 10,000 competitors from around the world competing in 51 different race events.
The Beavers are sending a single Varsity 4+ boat, coxed by sophomore Ben Garrison that will compete in the Championship Men's Fours category. The Beavers' crew will be powered by seniors Neall Koetje and Baxter Call, junior Glenn Miller and sophomore Roman Pjajka.
"This is a coxswain's race and Ben Garrison coxed a great course last year," said Winkler. "I'm sure he will be steering like Mario Andretti this weekend."
The Beavers earned a third place finish among the college crews and sixth overall in the CHAMP 4+ category at the HOCR in 2016.
OSU head coach Gabe Winkler will be racing in the Cornell Alumni Masters Fours [40+]. An Oregon State alumni 8+ boat will also partake in the two-day regatta.
COURSE: The 3-mile head race course takes place on the Charles River. The course runs upstream from Boston University Boathouse to Christian Herter Park.
RACE TIME: The Beavers will take the water at 10:12 a.m. PT, on Sunday.
