October 18, 2017 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Four members of the Oregon State wrestling team found themselves in the preseason Top-20 rankings released by The Open Mat website on Tuesday.
Â
Redshirt senior heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi, who sat out last season with a redshirt after taking fifth place at the 2016 NCAA Championships, is the highest individually ranked wrestler. Dhesi is the ranked sixth in the heavyweight class.
Â
Redshirt senior 141-pounder Jack Hathaway (19-13) was ranked 11th. Hathaway finished second at the 2017 Pac-12 Championship, and went 2-2 at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
Â
Senior 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser ranks 13th in the preseason poll. Bresser was 7-2 last season, and took second at the Pac-12 Championship in 2016.
Â
Redshirt junior 197-pounder Corey Griego (25-10) was ranked 14th. Griego was the Pac-12 Champion at 197 pounds last season, and was 1-2 at the NCAA Championships.
Â
The Beavers open the season on Nov. 6 with the annual Orange & Black Intrasquad scrimmage at Gill coliseum. Oregon State begins the dual-meet season a few days later on Nov. 9 when Eastern Oregon travel to Corvallis for the Beavers' home opener.
Â
Oregon State will also host duals with Wyoming (Jan. 14), Northern Colorado (Jan. 28), Cal Poly (Feb. 3) and Fresno State (Feb. 5).
Â
The Pac-12 Championships will be hosted by Oregon State this season, and will take place in Gill Coliseum on Feb. 25. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Â
Earlier this fall the Beavers were ranked 15th in the WIN 2017-18 Preseason Tournament Power Index (TPI). Dhesi (3), Bresser (13), Hathaway (13), and Griego (14) were also ranked.
Â
The TPI is based on the school's wrestlers who are rated in WIN's individual rankings, predicting possible All-American candidates in the 2018 NCAA Championships, set for March 16-18 in Cleveland.
