Beavers post cumulative GPA of 3.18 during 2016-17 academic year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (OSU/United Soccer Coaches) – The Oregon State University men's soccer program was honored by the United Soccer Coaches Association this week as one of 295 men's programs to earn the 2016-17 College Team Academic Award.
"This team academic award is incredibly important," said head coach Steve Simmons. "We focus so much on competing on the field, and since we all dedicate a lot of time to that all year round, it just shows how incredible time-managers the student-athletes are, to invest that much time into their soccer and still be able to reach their highest potential academically."
The Beavers had a team cumulative GPA of 3.18 and have several current members named to the Pac-12 All-Academic teams as senior Timmy Mueller (Post Falls, Idaho) and junior Nathan Braaten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) were both first team selections in 2016. Senior Jordan Jones (Pacific Grove, Calif.) and junior Don Tchilao (Chandler, Ariz.) were both honorable mentions the same year.
Mueller and Braaten were also named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District with Mueller earning a spot on the team in 2015.
"You can list a number of student-athletes who have stood out," added Simmons, "and you have to give credit to the guys who are upperclassmen since they're in upper-division classes and they've been doing this for three or four years now.
I know guys like Timmy [Mueller] and Nathan [Braaten], among many others, are people who are going to be successful in the field, and when they hang up the boots they're certainly going to have wonderful opportunities going forward. So they've really done us proud."
Mueller was also named one of 60 candidates for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award® announced at the end of September. He finished the 2016-17 academic year with a cumulative GPA of 3.85.
"I have to give credit to the coaching staff as well," said Simmons. "Ben Stoddard is our point person for our academics and Darr Tucknott, our academic counselor for the student-athletes.
"They put a lot of time into making sure that the structure is in place for our student-athletes to succeed in the classroom and I know it doesn't happen automatically."
Oregon State will face California this week on Thursday, October 12. The game will broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks with kickoff set for 4 p.m. PT.
