Xavier Crawford Picks Off Another National Honor
January 09, 2017 | Football
CORVALLIS – Oregon State redshirt-freshman cornerback Xavier Crawford added another postseason honor Monday by being named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America team.
Â
The honor is the third for Crawford since the conclusion of the season. The Pittsburg, Calif., native had a Beaver team-high 50 unassisted tackles and overall was fourth on the team with 70 stops. He co-led the team with Treston Decoud for pass breakups with 10 and was the top freshman defender for the category in the Pac-12.
Â
The public health major started all 12 games for a defense that made dramatic improvement from a year ago and will head into the 2017 season with players who accounted for 67 percent of the team's tackles in 2016 returning.
Â
Crawford also has been included in the USA Today Freshman All-America Team and he and offensive lineman Gus Lavaka were members of the Campus Insiders' Team. Lavaka also was selected to the Pro Football Focus Freshman All-America Team.
Â
Oregon State returns to the field in preparation for the 2017 season next month with the annual Spring Game set for March 18 at Reser Stadium. Season tickets are on sale now for the upcoming year at BeaverTickets.com
