Oregon State has a candidate for the second-straight season
CORVALLIS – Oregon State women's basketball standout Sydney Wiese has been named one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, one of the most prestigious honors in the nation, celebrating achievement both on and off the court.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their athletic platforms to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.Â
The list of 30 candidates was released on Thursday. The Senior CLASS Award Committee will evaluate the candidates, and select 10 finalists in February.
This marks the second-consecutive year the Beavers have had a Senior CLASS Award candidate, as Ruth Hamblin was a Senior CLASS Award All-American last year.
Wiese, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., is a three-time All-Pac-12 selection, and is the conference's career record-holder for 3-pointers made. She reached the 1,500 point mark last week, helping the Beavers earn a win over No. 9/9 Washington. Wiese has been selected to the watch lists for the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award, Wade Award and Lieberman Award this season. One of her best career performances came earlier this season, when she posted a triple-double against UC Davis.
A communication major, Wiese is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team honoree, and partnered with Oregon State gymnast Megan Jimenez to launch their own web series this year. She has additionally gained public speaking experience by serving as the host for Oregon State's 2016 Freshman Welcome Rally, and spending a game as PA announcer for the Beavers' softball team.
In the community, Wiese and her team have partnered with the Corvallis Southside Youth Outreach to reach out to underprivileged youth in Corvallis. She has also helped the team in numerous trips to the Boys and Girls Club, and went on a Candlelighters for Cancer fishing trip this summer.
As a team, Oregon State moved up to No. 12 in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches' Poll this week. The Beavers will be in the Bay Area this week, as they take on No. 20 California on Friday and No. 10 Stanford on Sunday.
