Beavs Score 196.700, Fall to Bruins
January 28, 2017 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State gymnastics team posted its second-highest score of the season on Saturday in a 197.325-196.700 loss to No. 8 UCLA before a Gill Coliseum crowd of 3,722.
Â
The 17th-ranked Beavers scored 49.000 or better on every event, capped by a 49.400 on the floor exercise. They hit all 24 of their routines and did not count a score lower than 9.700.
Â
"I was proud of the fight they showed today," OSU head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We had a [beam] lineup that was up was a little different then we planned on, so the girls reached really well with changing positions quickly.
Â
"When that flag comes up and the first person starts, you can't change that lineup and our athletes did a good job with that."
Â
Kaytianna McMillan and Madeline Gardiner went 1-2 on the floor exercise to pace the Beavers (4-1). They also went 2-3 in the all-around (McMillan 39.500, Gardiner 39.275) behind UCLA Olympian Madison Kocian's 39.525.
Â
McMillan set a PR of 9.950 while winning the floor exercise. She tied teammate Mary Jacobsen for fourth on vault (9.825); tied teammate Erica Aufiero for third on bars (9.900) and tied Gardiner for seventh on beam (9.825).
Â
"It was a really good start for us" to the Pac-12 season, McMillan said. "Obviously it didn't end exactly the way we wanted it to, but with that score we will take it.
Â
"We are definitely moving in the right direction. It shows that we are ready to compete with the other Pac-12 teams."Â
Â
Gardiner tied teammate Dani Dessaints for eighth on vault (9.775). She was 12th on bars (9.750) but then finished strong by taking seventh on beam (9.825) and second on floor (9.925), a whisker behind McMillan.
Â
Dessaints tied for second in the beam with a 9.875. Taylor Ricci tied for fourth in the floor at 9.875.
Â
Chaplin said there is ample room for improvement even though OSU hit 24-for-24.
Â
"There were a lot of little things that became bigger things when you look at the score," she said, such as steps on vault and landings on beam and bars, so every routine flows smoothly.
Â
"I've been pleased to see how we have been pretty consistent on scoring. Now we need to really clean up all those little things so we can go to the next level."
Â
The Beavers face host Arizona at 5 p.m. on Feb. 4 in their next meet. Their next home match is Feb. 11 against Utah; the Pac-12 Network will televise both events.
