Oregon State stretches streak over Oregon to 12-straight
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 11/12 Oregon State women's basketball team extended its winning streak over Oregon to 12 games, as the Beavers earned hard-fought a 43-40 victory Friday evening at Matt Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore. The game was part of the Civil War series presented by PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway/Albertsons and Your Local Toyota Dealers.
"This was a big defensive battle," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "This game had a ton of intensity to it, and it definitely had a rivalry feel. I'm really proud of our team for defending the way they did, and then for executing the plays that we needed to finish it out. Really proud of the effort tonight.Â"
Oregon had the ball with 12 seconds remaining and a chance to level the score, but the Beavers played lock-down defense on the final possession to force a turnover and claim the victory.
Senior Sydney Wiese finished with 12 points, including a vital 3-pointer to give the Beavers the lead with less than two minutes remaining. The guard ended the evening 4-for-6 from 3-point range and pulled down five rebounds. Seniors Gabriella Hanson and Kolbie Orum tallied nine points apiece.
Redshirt junior Brenna Brown went for nine points and pulled down six rebounds. Overall, Oregon State's upperclassmen accounted for 42 of the team's 43 points.
The Beavers held the Ducks to 28 percent shooting on the evening, including limiting the Pac-12's top 3-point percentage team to 1-for-8 from long range. Oregon State held a 41-34 advantage on the glass.
The first five minutes of the game were dominated by the defenses, as Oregon took a 6-5 advantage into the first media timeout of the evening. That trend would continue throughout the opening frame, as the Ducks found themselves up 10-8 after 10 minutes of play.
The Beavers took their first lead of the contest mid-way through the second quarter, when Orum knocked down a jumper to put OSU in front 13-12. Oregon responded with five-straight points to take a 17-13 edge into the intermission.
Oregon State exploded out of the break, scoring the first seven points of the second half to jump ahead 20-17. The Ducks would briefly retake the lead, but the Beavers bounced back with 11-unanswered points to go ahead by double-digits. Oregon State took a 33-25 lead into the closing period.
Oregon cut the lead to three with 5:39 left in regulation, and went in front 37-36 with 2:45 to play. Oregon State tied the game up on a free throw on the next possession, before Wiese knocked down a corner three to put the Beavers in front with under two minutes to play. Oregon would get back within two with under a minute to go, but the Beavers were able to hold on to take the win by three.
The Beavers will return home on Sunday for the second game of this season's Civil War series. The game will tip off at 11 a.m. and will air live on ESPNU.
