Beavers back home to face No. 21 Stanford

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team will unveil a new competition mat on Monday night when its hosts No. 21 Stanford in its Pacific-12 Conference opener. The dual begins at 7:05 p.m.; it will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
It is the first home match for the Beavers (2-6) in more than two months. They faced Michigan on Nov. 20, 2016, in their home opener.
"We have done a lot of traveling," OSU coach Jim Zalesky said, noting the Beavers have been to the East Coast twice, to the Rocky Mountain region, to Utah/Nevada and to Chicago already this winter. "It's kind of taxing.
"It's good to have a home meet, to sleep in our own beds. However, those road trips are not an excuse. We just haven't wrestled well."
The Beavers should be at full strength for the first time since a 31-15 win at Northern Colorado on Jan. 13. Senior 149-pounder Joey Delgado missed the last three duals with a knee injury, but he will be back in the lineup against the Cardinal.
"He and (141-pounder) Jack Hathaway have both battled injuries," Zalesky said. "Jack's wasn't quite as serious, but having a week of practice and helped both of them out."
Redshirt freshman Seth McLeod, a midseason transfer from Boise State, may make his varsity debut at 184. That would allow freshman Bob Coleman and redshirt freshman Weston Dobler to move down a weight class from 184 and 174, respectively.
"Guys are wrestling above their ideal weights," Zalesky said. "We had to do that to put a team together," but McLeod's arrival could fill the hole at 184 and set of a domino effect that strengthens the lineup.
He is a two-time state-champion, a two-time state runner-up and a junior wrestling standout from Post Falls High School in Post Falls, Idaho. He took second place at the Boxer Open at Pacific University on Jan. 15 in his first action as a Beaver.
Stanford brings its most formidable team in years to Corvallis. The Cardinal have six wrestlers ranked by InterMat: Freshman Gabriel Townsell (#19, 125); redshirt junior Connor Schram (#13, 133); sophomore Joey McKenna (#3, 141); redshirt junior Keaton Subjeck (#18, 165); redshirt senior Peter Galli (#19, 174) and redshirt junior Nathan Butler (#9, hwt.).
"They are probably the team to beat in the Pac-12," Zalesky said of the Cardinal, who face Boise State on Saturday night before coming to Corvallis. "They beat Arizona State, they have the most solid team.
"It will be a good match for us to see where we are at, with important matches for seeding" for the upcoming Pac-12 Championships, at Stanford on Feb. 26.
"We have a lot of room to improve" before then, Zalesky said. "We didn't wrestle well at all last week, for whatever reason.
"Some individuals have to turn some things around. We have some who can wrestle better than they have, and have a positive effect on our team."
