January 26, 2017 | Men's Basketball
BOULDER, Colo.   – Oregon State sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. scored a career-high 26 points on Thursday night but it wasn't enough as the Beavers fell 85-78 to Colorado at the Coors Events Center.
Thompson Jr. was 10 of 16 from the field and had six rebounds and three assists in his fourth 20-point game of the season and the fifth of his career. His previous career best was 25 points, against UCLA on Dec. 30.
He has scored in double figures in 14 consecutive games since returning to action on Dec. 1 after missing six games with a foot injury.
Sophomore center Drew Eubanks added 27 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in his fourth 20-point game of the season and his career. He has five double-doubles this season, six in his career. He was 10 of 13 from the field and 7 of 9 from the foul line.
The game was close throughout and the Beavers (4-17, 0-8 Pac-12) were within 72-70 after a Thompson Jr. 3-pointer with 4:06 remaining. However, the Buffaloes (11-10, 1-7) went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take an insurmountable 81-70 advantage.
Eubanks has scored 49 points in his last two starts, as he had 22 in a loss to California on Jan. 21. Has at least one blocked shot in 16 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in school history.
The OSU record is 20 straight games, by Nick DeWitz over the end of the 2005 season and the start of the 2006 campaign. Eubanks was tied for second all-time with Scott Haskin, who had a 15-game streak during the 1993 season, before Thursday.
Eubanks and Thompson are both averaging an even 18 points per game in Pac-12 play. Each has 144 points in eight Pac-12 games.
Freshman guard JaQuori McLaughlin had 12 points and four assists. He made all three of his 3-point shots in reaching double figures for the 14th time this season.
The Beavers shot .549 (28-51) from the field, a season-best in conference action and against Division I opposition. It was their first game over .500 since they shot .543 (25-46) against Kent State on Dec. 21.
OSU had its highest-scoring first half of the Pac-12 season and trailed 41-40 at halftime. The Beavers were 16 of 27 from the floor and 5 of 10 from beyond the arc; Thompson Jr. had 13 points, Eubanks 12.
The Beavers conclude their road trip to the mountain schools on Saturday with a 4 p.m. PT game with Utah at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
